lump on neck

I fetched the boy in tonight, and he has quite a big swelling on the under side of his neck - kind of right on his gullet.

Its quite wide - but I can grab the swollen bit in my hand. It is completely soft, and it doesn't seem to hurt him at all. He ate his tea tonight, and seems quite happy (he's only been with me for less than a week - so he seems normal compared to the last 5 /6 nights...)

There are no marks around the site of the swelling - my initial thought was snake bite - but there is nothing around the swelling at all.

Anyone got any ideas what this is? I am going round to go and check on him again in a little while - and will get vets out if its still up in the morning - but I have never seen anything like this at all.

Do you have any barbed wire or anything in the field. Could he have been trying to eat from the next field and caught it on anything. Is there any sign of a puncture mark within the swelling. Id have a good look round your field for any protruding objects that he may have got caught up on or leaned on. Is there heat in the swelling? Arnica and witchhazel cooling gel is good as long as there isnt an open cut. Good luck and keep us posted !!

there is a little bit of heat in it - but nothing that dramatic at all. No - no barbed wire - but I did wonder whether either the yearling had kicked out and caught him right in the neck (not impossible) or that because he had had his rug of for a day he had been rubbing himself on the little bit of post and rail that is in the corner of the field, and got a bit carried away rubbing himself.

No puncture wounds or any marks surrounding the swelling - which is mainly why I am so puzzled!


He seems quite happy and he has gone off out this morning and is eating and everything normally. He had made quite a mess overnight in the stable - but then he is very new here - so not entirely unexpected!

Will try some arnica and witchhazel though - will let you know what happens!
