Just wondering if anyone has had any experience.
I read numerous tales about cancer of the Penis, but i'm a bit perplexed as my 24 yr old Shetland pony has a lump on the outer part of his sheath.
He is black skinned, and when the lump first appeared it was also black, with a scab - underneath was pink

The vet saw it a few weeks ago, and due to his age thinks we should leave it alone unless it changes.
It is now a smooth pink lump the size of a pea, and he has another pink area about 2 mm across closer to the tip, but this is not raised in any way (i'm still referring to the outer fleshy part, rather than his penis).

I realise it could be cancer, but was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts - i.e old man with lumps and bumps.
He's very well in himself, and is eating and weeing fine.
Thoughts would be appreciated, and I will be getting the vet to have another look soon.

Hi Millimoo,

Sorry I dont have anything useful in terms of experience, but I wanted to say you are absolutely doing the right thing having your vet out to have another look,

I would just continue to keep an eye on it and keep your vet informed, hope it turns out to be nothing sinister.

thanks Gemsie.... i'm quite shocked at how common cancer can be.
His well being is the most important thing, so as long as he's happy and comfy that's all that matters. And if god forbid it's proves to be the worst, I will do right by him.
My family will kill me for this, because I always think the worst..... you'd think at 37 i'd be a bit more measured. but hey ho, i've owned him for 20 yrs, and whilst a monster with children on his back, I love him dearly

I have lost a pony to cancer of the penis (squamous cell carcinoma) but the growth was on his penis not sheath

Have you seen his penis lately? (what a non-horsey person would think,eh?!)

If he were mine I would leave well alone.

At his age I'm sure you would not put him through cancer treatment or surgery.

I would just be keeping an eye on it in case the flies are making it sore it or if it gets infected

Hi foxy1
Yes, have seen his penis !!! ;-) it's looks fine.
The lump is clean and smooth, and no flies as the skin isn't broken.
I also agree, I wouldn't put him through cancer treatment - I don't think I could put any pony through some of the treatments I've read about.
The only thing I would consider is if the vet said remove it if it started to grow (as in easier to remove whilst small). However the vet said to leave well alone at the moment, and they are very good horse vets.

As it's clean and smooth it doesn't sound like sqamous cell carcinoma which looks like lots of granulated tissue, like hundreds of tiny warts.

Sounds like you are doing everything you can
