Hi,

My horse has a lump on his sheath. It doesnt appear to be bothering him, but does anyone know what it might be? I'm not sure whether to get the vet to make a special trip out to see it or whether it would wait until he has his jabs in September. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

It doesnt appear to be changing - its about the size of a broad bean and just appeared one day - it might have got slightly bigger but if it has its only slightly. Should I be getting the vet out asap or do you think it can wait?

Maybe email your vet the photo, sarcoids are so unpredictable, it may get bigger and become ulcerated which wouldn't be nice in the hot weather or it may stay like that for years, you could monitor it until Septmeber photographing any change regulary then if anything significant happens your vet may be more informed to advise of appropriate treatment.

Sarcoid - very similar position to one which grew this spring and has just fallen off my gelding, the vet had to visit and remove the core which has left an open wound. I would email the pic to your vet and if he thinks that it is a sarcoid leave it well alone until after the 'fly' season which probably coincides with the jabs in Sept!

My horse has a smaller one on his sheath, he is a grey. It could be a melonoma/sarcoid or it could be a fibrous reaction to a fly bite. In my horse I suspect it is the latter. It could also be a reaction to a tick, my horse swells up after a tick bite.

Either way, there is no rush to do anything about it esp with all the flies around at the moment.

Keep an eye on it, photograph any changes and mention it to the vet in September.

are there any inside the sheath? i would definately get the vet out if there are, and does he have any black gunge when you clean him? i started using this forum in january and my post had exactly the same heading as yours - he was a grey mind you, and yep those flies can bite.
