A horse on our yard has lumps all over his body including his head. His hay hasn’t changed supplier nor has he had any new rugs on etc.

They have been up for about a week so she has taken him off all feed and is only on hay.

Any ideas what it could be?? I personally would get the vet but she said she has spoke to her vet and he says there is nothing he can give him ......(strange).

My boy has had this before, vets thought it was either something he rolled in that he was allergic to, or something like a mane and tail/coat shine type product. However I disagree that the vets can give nothing, my vets gave kind of horse antihistimine I think (Will check that but can't right now)

a few horses on our yard have got them, all of them cobs, some say its a heat rash, others think it could be protien lumps (if horse has been on alot of haylage and feed) and another option could be that they have eaten something out in the field/hedge due to limited grass.

think the vets can give an antihishamene(sp??)
let us know if your vet does give anything for it,

You can give them steroid tablets but it's not great for them to do so.
My vet's advice is always bute up, antibiotics if they get infected and use steroids if truly necessary- they need to be administered early on if poss to have maximum benefit.

Our cob was allergic to Barley. There are some very nice barley free foods out there

Perhaps it's midges? There's been a wave of them since it thawed. If it was summer I'd also suggest wasps.

Thanks... He is a fat little cob type and she insists on putting lots of rugs on so heat was my first thought.

He really isn’t on anything with protein because he is too fat already.

They did go out in a different field because of the snow and he does like a good roll so that is a strong possibility.

Allergy was my thinking, i thought antihistamines and am glad that you knowledgeable lot confirmed that for me.

I will keep you all posted.

Sounds like an allergy the vets should be able to give an antihistimine like jess said or some kind of steroid injection, sounds very similar to something my boy had and it went down straight away after an injection

I doubt that the vet can do nothing! Id try another vet if not, Id be a little concerned. Sounds like an allergic reaction to something.

sounds like urticaria which is an allergic reaction to something in his environment

antihistimines are not very effective in these cases and no longer really recommended as the only currently EU approved ones are not strong enough

the vet can give a corticosteroid injection intravenously for quick relief, then another one intramuscluarly for a longer lasting effect (a few days)

if the lumps are still there, then I think a vet is needed - the allergen must still be in his environment

take some rug offs, it wont be helping if my little cob gets hot he gets covered in heat bumps. He didnt go up from his MW in the day in all the snow and had 370g on at night and is only in a MW rug at night now. And he is clipped just has a good radiator! even if it isnt the rugs they wont be helping if they get too warm as they will be encouraging blood to flow to the surface, prob increasing the allergic reaction if thats what it is.

Ester - Thanks she is one of those people who things the horse needs several rugs on all the time just in case and he is in an indoor stable so even warmer. Maybe she should take a few off and see if it gets any better.

they are more than likely heat bumbs. My chap is cobbish fully clipped light to medium rug on and still getting heat bumps where it is sooo mild. I dont even overrug him!!

They will go in their own time but if worried get the vet out.

tell her I told you to take them off

, if he is fat he has enough insulting layers as it is. Mine will get a full clip (blanket atm) next month as when the weather starts to warm he is too slow to loose it and gets far too hot.

My boy gets urticaria usually once a year, for a week in the spring so I assume its something he's eaten and it goes away as quickly as it came. However.... my friends gelding at our yard came out in lumps and bumps all over his tummy, sheath and along his back, in about November, and they didnt go away. Vet called, biopsy taken, diagnosis was hypersensitivity (or an allergy to me and you!) and he was given steriod tablets for them, in fact two lots because the one lot didnt quite clear it up. Warning though, it was an insurance job, it would've cost her something like £350 for the tabs otherwise!!! He was fine in himself and im not so sure they wouldnt have gone eventually anyway.

my mare had these come up last saterday! had vet out this morning as they had gotten worse. he was quite confused with the fact they are only spreading up her neck and not on her body. only thing he can think of is an alergic reaction to something she has eaten in hedges or come into contact with, he told me that antihistimines wouldnt doing anything. if they havent gone down by monday he mentioned antibiotics. they can give steriods but there are health risks with giving steriods apparently so doesnt want to go down that route. he also told me to leave them alone and do nothing as i could make them worse and not to let anyone use my grooming kit as it may be something that can be passed on!
i would recommend getting vet out if they dont go down soon, i was just lucky the vet happened to be at my yard for another horse

My horse had this when I first got him in June - all down one side, quite hard and the skin felt very hot. My vet suggeted Piriton which I tried for 10 days or so but it had no effect. We concluded that it was some sort of heat rash. Since the very cold weather set in, the lumps have all gone. He's not clipped and has been rugged up.

One of my mares started last night with a couple of lumps on her neck. If it was summer I would just have dismissed them as fly bites. She seems fine in herself. Definitely allergic type lumps but nothing's changed in her routine/feeding.

Wonder what's going on?

my Anglo is senstive in the skin dept. she gets lumpy easily, she ate a bush yest and came in with lumps on her.

if not overfed protein then sounds like an allegry or just too hot. If they arent causing discomfort and go down in 24-48 hrs i wouldnt personally give anything. If theres something in his field causing this that should be ascertained, not mask the issue with drugs if it can be helped.

The horse could just simply be too hot.

I don't believe for minute this person has spoke to the vet and that the vet said that, she must be telling porkies.

The horse could of just had a simple allergic reaction to something its eaten in the field and vets do treat it with medication, in most cases if there has been no changes in diet/rugs or anything else that could cause it, they would treat it as an emergency call out as well.
