our field mare (injured retired eventer) has recently developed some lumps

at first we thought it was fly bites as they were solid/filled in and round in form but gradually they have expanded and become hollowed inside/ large ring like forms like below (sorry not the best pictures as it was a sunny and windy day and she wasn't too keen on getting her photo taken):

we have considered that its an allergic reaction but nothing is different to her normal life as far as we are aware

shes in good spirits and showing no other symptoms and non of the other horses are showing anything simular to her

so what could it be? and should be show her to the vet?
any help would be gratefully received

she is literately on 24/7 turnout and gets a handful of spillers happyhoof (which shes been on for as long as i can remember 4years +) to keep her occupied when the others are getting fed

might take her off that incase its a dodgy batch/bag and see what the results would be?

My mare has suffered from exactly the same lumps all Summer just starting to abate with coat change. Had the vet out and said they were an allergic reaction caused by a bite but all the lumps look like bites! Also had the steroid tablets did not work. They are bites as if you look closely you will see a yellow plug in the middle.

My mare was bitten through a boett rug. The only thing I have found to work with these lumps is an anti bacterial shampoo and covering up to keep the midges at bay.

Also she only got them on one side which was weird.

Resupgirl could you happen to tell me the name of the shampoo please?

She def has more on one side than the other so i wonder if it is fly bites? although shes never had them before and shes been with up in the same fields for many years?

How old is she hun? Horses' immune systems don't work as efficiently as they age so something she coped happily with a year ago might start to be a challenge to her. There's a lot of late flies down our way - got a couple of bites myself last weekend - not horseflies - some other pesky little bleeder! I'd keep an eye on her, pamper her a bit and I bet she'll be fine. Give her a H&HO hug x.

shes 10 now
don't worry about the hugs and treats shes been getting lots of organic carrots - which are costing us a fortune buts shes a happy field pone

we've took her off her field so im going to see how things go over the next few days to try and eliminate that as a factor
