With this lovely warm sunny weather this week my two beasts (Snoop and Winston) have been covered in bites/lumps.
I thought they might be heat lumps, but i change their rugs during the day to light weight rugs.
Ive washed them both off when ive ridden them as I know winston is allergic to his own sweat.
But still they both have lumps.
This morning snoopys lumps were worse one side was covered. Just like the picture for the Allen & Page advert for feed intollerance.
Its really odd, as i havent changed their feed or anything. Its only since this warm weather.

Some of these lumps have tops to them, and i have picked them off which obviously snoop isnt keen on. Which makes me think are they bites?
Maybe from the straw?

Any ideas?

Hi,
That is most probably an allergic reaction and will go away in a few days. Just keep clean and it will be ok unless it is hives which i do not think it will be. Some times there is a form of mite in straw one of mine had a severe reaction to straw a while back her back legs were covered in rashes which she rubbed down through the skin, changed to a sawdust bed and it has not returned.

Yep very similar ECW.
They go down then return or move somewhere else. All very odd. Winston has always suffered with lumps due to sweat and heat. But its just odd that the both of them are suffering this week.

Corrie...I would have said an allergic reaction but its been happening all week with only two of the 5 horses i look after own/look after.

I thought it might have been washing powder but we havent changed anything. Feed is the same.

All very odd....

Not much help, but - my old mare had lumps which sound like you have described. When she had them they were on most of her body and neck. Some disappeared and then some would reappear elsewhere. We had the vet out who at first thought it was an allergic reaction, but then ruled it out as it was very unlikely, and so I was just told that they were heat/sweaty bumps. She got them for about a month, and then they all started going down and not reappearing. She never had a problem with them again.

BBs - Oz has had these (not quite so bad but noticeable, raised lumps on his quarters and neck). I've been putting them down to warm weather and new grass. He's also been having swollen glands after grazing. I think the weather has changed so quickly and the new grass is coming through with a vengeance.

We use E.45 1% steroid cream on one particular horse that gets lumps like these.

Seems to work, and lumps disappear quite quickly.

My boy tends to get Utacaria this time of year which looks like a heat rash, he only gets it as the grass starts to come through, I just make sure he doesn't get too warm and it seems to stay under control. He gets very uptight when it appears so just have to keep him mellow, I believe his is due to the fructans in the grass.
I've also just stuck him on Restore (Global Herbs) which is a liver tonic and Sarc X as his sarcoids spring into life this time of year too and his skin has settled really well.
And no, he is not a lucky ned!!!

Is it like these too?

My boys were heat related and washing powder related too. I washed his saddlecloths again with no powder and changed to two thins ones and he's been fine since. I did have a minor panic as they went down and a week later they came back worse again
frown.gif

They've been gone for over a week now. His moved from his saddle cloth area all the way back to his bum
frown.gif

He seems fine though. No lumps this week

Thanks again everyone for help.
Yep Law very similar to yours. Snoopy has obviously reacted badly as not only are they bite type swellings but some of them are the size of my fist!
Mother has gone to get some Hc45 and see if that helps - i washed him in very diluted hibiscrub but no change this morning.
He spent the day out yesterday and again out today, as we thought it might be something in the straw as he rolls a lot.
Will continue to keep him as cool as possible.
What shampoo did you get from the vet Lisa?

My mare has had these bumps every year at this time since I've had her (10 yrs). This year they are worse than ever. My vet has said they are an allergy to dust mites in the bed so I have put her on mats. Have hoovered the stable. Wash her rugs every other day at 60 degress to kill the mites. She is on Atarax which is an anti histamine. They have gone down a bit but some new ones are still coming up so still not sure what it is.

I thought about getting an anti histamine for him too and washing his rugs.

I just dont know what they are, but mites in bedding did spring to mind.

washing the rugs every other day - omg, thats going to be a right chore and a half if I have to do that with Chants rugs.
Mine is on piriton but I have Atarax to stop my skin itching - **wonders if i have enough to try Chant on them??***

still waiting for the bloods to come back to tell me what shes allergic too.

BBs - my instructor has seen her tonight at the yard and wonders if she is allergic to her own sweat. How did you find out that Winston was allergic to sweat?

Winston sweats quite a lot even on cold days fully clipped, basically because it was so cold i would just let him dry naturally with a rug on. However, then the poor lamb was covered in awful lumps. So i decided to wash him and his numnahs everytime he sweated - if he wasnt too bad i would just sponge him off, but his nunmahs were washed every other day.
After that, didnt have a problem. but say i go hunting and come back and dont bath him really well he comes up in lumps again
frown.gif

This evening snoopy is worse than ever
frown.gif
he wont let you touch him, hes very quiet in his box. YO has just checked him to say yes he is very quiet and wasnt eating his hay, but he has picked at some haylage she gave him.

I gave him two bute this evening in hope that the swellings would go down. I also have HC cream now and will plaster him in that tomorrow if i have too.

Poor love, he is now getting lumps on lumps

BBs - i know how youre feeling. Chantins dont seem to getting much better. Good thing is they dont seem to be getting any worse either. Been cleaning them with diluted hibi scrub as directed by vet, which seems to be drying them out so they are now forming some kind of scabs on her skin. Shes very uneasy about you touching them, even to the point she threatens you.
I tried some aloe vera gel on a patch of them on saturady night - come Sunday morning the patch was really swollen and hot - wont be doing that again soon!

Took these last night.

her coat has gone all staring now which im not too happy with. She is a lot quieter but vet said this might happen with the piriton. Hurry up bloods.

ECW.
They are very similar, his were more swollen than that. This morning after 2 bute they were still swollen but no where near as much. THeyve all dried out and have hard tops on them and when i tried to pick them off they have all bits of puss underneath
crazy.gif

YO says they have something out in Germany virtually identical called Pills.
Anyway, will continue to wash him off and apply the cream (which i did this morning) and hes now turned out covered in fly spray.
So fingers x he starts to make a bit of a recovery.
He was far more chirpy this morning too, and trotted across the field

We have an IDXTB mare who has exactly the same as your photo ECW. Blood tests back inconclusive. Vets have told us to pop her on Dengie feed only - fibremax or something like that and alfa a - have ruled out the bedding/haylage/washing powder/brushes - bute & HC45 not eradicated it.

Well just wanted to give you all an update.
The bute had reduced the swellings considerably, snoop was very quiet on tuesday night but much brighter yesterday.
The spots still looked and felt uncomfortable so decided NOT to ride him last night. However i coated him in HC 45 cream instead.
This morning they swellings had nearly gone and his body is covered in hard tops to the spots. So ive bought some shampoo to wash him in over the weekend.
However, hes much happier and should be ridden later YAY.
Thanks for all your help, just hope that he continues to get better now.

You didnt clip him again at the weekend did you? Just wondering if some loose hairs might have irritated him? Have you tried salt water.

I was most impressed but the simple minds and all thaat.

I gave madam a tidy up last night got the scissors to her mane, looks a lot smarter was getting a bit long and wispy at the ends - I like the blunt cut look.

Going to chop off those feathers again - might invest in a pair of clippers this year or at least some trimmers. She has loads of cat hairs I HATE CAT HAIRS.

So glad the HC cream worked. What you've described above is exactly the same as what we experienced.

We washed in a mild hibiscrub solution - and kept applying the HC cream daily as well.

BEWARE you will have to adopt very sly mechanisms to buy as much HC cream as you want. Most places will only sell you two at a time. So go to different chemesits with a friend etc. To get as much as you want.

So glad there's been an improvement.
