Lumps/Bites that won't go away

My mare was eaten alive at one point during summer and was covered in lumps and bumps all over her sides, some of which were massive. She has never had a reaction to bites before or had so many like this but has been in a summer rug and now a turnout since.

The majority of them have gone after turning into tiny scabs and then healing, they didn't seem to bother her at the time but she's still got clusters of them on her sides around the girth area and they're really itchy and irritating for her. Some of them are just lumps at the moment but others have a small yellow crusty scab in the middle. There are so many I'd have to bathe her in cream and she's also got quite a thick coat already.

Before I ask the vets, does anyone have any ideas of what I can do, please? Thanks!

Nettex itch stop salve I find works well for mine, I would try that on the bites, I use it through summer around eyes ears sheath, as the little mozzi things hate it, doesn't keep the horse flies or house flies away for some reason.

Thank you. I'll have a look!

Sounds like some may be infected.

I’d be inclined to clip her out and bath regularly with Malasab shampoo.

But it may be an idea to get a vet’s opinion.
Thank you. I worry about clipping in case it hurts going over them but definitely something to consider as well!

I sympathise with your mare. I've got a patch on my leg that started out as bites in summer. I've started using antiseptic cream after every shower and when I get dressed/undressed and it is now healing. In true horse owner fashion I was so busy looking after the field dwellers I didn't realise just how long they were taking to heal! For the horse I would use Malaseb daily, followed by germoline. I do second the advice to consult with your vet, though. A picture would probably do on an email, just to check it's nothing which warrants antibiotic cream or similar.

Thank you. That sounds irritating!
I have already got Flamazine which I can put on to see if it helps. It's just hard knowing where to start as there are so many over quite a large area and I worry it'll all just get rubbed off on the rugs! She wouldn't cope without one so that removes that option.

When I bath her, it will only be on her sides where the lumps are. Do you think it will be okay to rug when still damp maybe just with a fleece underneath? Only as it's going to be cold, I won't be able to let her go without one. I don't want it to harbour anything though.

I'll have to source some Malaseb. Does Hibiscrub work in a similar way? I think I have some Dermonline Insect Shampoo already to hand but I'm not sure if that will be any help.

Coatex medicated shampoo isnt prescription and has similarities to Malaseb.

Vet has advised to try the Flamazine and monitor. Awkward as it's just such a big area and being rugged at the moment, it's probably all getting rubbed off.
I've been bathing, only twice so far which brings up loads of scabs and crusty bits but no lumps have reduced in size that I can see yet. It just leaves red spots.

I've just seen the other thread about the balancer and skin issues. I've recently swapped the Fast Fibre for Veteran Vitality. The ingredients are pretty much all the same apart from higher calories, added herbs and "field beans". I wonder if this could be causing a reaction? I've never seen bites to still be there since summer but they weren't irritating her then which is odd.
