I am soooo worried about my beauty. Lately he has developed these lumps where the saddle goes. They are not by the spine but, well, take a look. Now what are they? I have heard various theories about sweaty backs and blocked glands etc but my vet had a look and suspects his saddle is too small. The lumps are hard and do not get worse or better depending on when i ride. Have booked a saddler to come and have a look, my vet (who has done a saddle fitting course) says that my saddle needs re-flocking and appears too tight. What a worry. Any ideas anyone?????????

Excuse my hideously ancient hands, i am very old you know!!!!

A Horse up my yard has got bumps like those from a badly fitting saddle. His have gone hard and the vet said there is nothing can be done now as they've been there for a couple of years (they're still riding in said saddle too, even though they've been told by vets, saddlers and all sorts it doesn't fit). The vet said if it had been sorted earlier they would have gone, but they are permanent now as they've turned fibrous.

Do they go a bit scabby after a day or two??

My mare kept getting lumps like that under her saddle, and all over when she is clipped.

I have bought a sheepskin numnah, and wash her down with diluted hibiscrub after she has been ridden. I have found that the lumps are gradually going, but I havent clipped her yet this year........

My horse has one of these lumps when I had his first saddle, the saddle was to tight on him. Once I changed the saddle the lump went.

Charlie had these last year after I had clipped him to. The scabs would come of quite easily and wee quite pussy underneath. Not sure why he got them but turned into a really nasty skin infection on his head!

Dont panic just yet.......

Merlin had these.... loads of.... the first year I had him...

Saddle was checked.. fitted fine!!!

Saddler told me to always wash his back off after I ride him!! Which I do.... also his girth area.

Still has same saddle, lumps have never come back. The did appear after I bought a rather expensive sheepskin saddle pad though

My horse has something very similar, he got them last summer too. My saddle is regulary checked and the vet gave me Betnovate to rub in a couple of time a day and it did seem to work.. Vet said you have to get them early or they granulise??? and stay for ever but are harmless and only cause problems if they are rubbed by saddle etc.
