Lumps down horses neck!! Any ideas what they are?

My horse has been out for the last 2 nights, when I brought her in the first morning she had a few lumps on both side of her neck but this morning I went out and found that she was covered all over both sides of her neck. She doesn't have them anywhere else and does not seem worried about them.She was not wearing a rug. Any ideas?
 
Fly bites? My mare comes out in lumps when bitten by horse flies, they don't seem to bother her at all and go down after a few days :)

I'd second fly bites (or an allergic reaction). The flies have been horrendous the last few days - was beginning to think I might start riding my boy in his fly rug!
 
yep sounds like fly bites!

worth keeping an eye on but nothing to worry about. maybe invest in a fly rug if she gets bitten a lot :)
 
I don't think they are fly bites because they don't have a headd to them and they seem quite big like one of those lumpy spongetex clothes
 
My mare comes in with these in the summer, just fly bites/reactions. There are no heads on the ones she has either. I normally give her a bute to bring the swellings down.

Ive since invested in a brilliant fly rug though so dont have that problem any more. I also feed her Feedmarks FlyFree which has worked brilliantly.
 
My mare goes like that - its a reaction to horsefly bites. Put a fly rug on her and see if they go. Sometimes bad ones have needed an injection to get them down. If not, some prirton may help.
 
Its strange she has only got them since I put her out at night you would think there would be more about in the day. Thanks for all your help
 
My boy has got them all down one side of his neck and the odd one here and there elsewhere on his body. A fly rug wont help as mine wears a snuggy SI set and he has loads. The area goes a bit scurfydusty and around the lump goes a bit bald. I put benzyl benzoate on his and they have shrunk a lot but are still visible. They seem to getting better but if this changes I'll let the vet intervene.
 
Yes, I'd would go down the Hives route.

Perhaps she's allergic to the grass pollen. I know, if you walk throught our fields at the moment, all the grasses are scattering their pollen.

Think it will be a case of elimination, start by her wearing a fly rug, then go from there.
 
sounds like fly/midge/mossie bits ... last weekend suddenly all but a handful of the 45 horses on our yard came up in varying degrees of bumps .. some only neck, some from head to tail .. after investigating feed / hay etc .. we have finally come to the conclusion it is the sodding midges around due to the lengthy damp/slight warm weather .. the horses which have started to wear bug rugs, have more or less cleared up .. the odd sweetitch horses which had already bug rugs on only had the odd lumps where the rug was not ..
