Over the last few weeks my horse has developed some lumps in his saddle area. They are between half and one centimeter in diameter and do not seem to have a 'head' as such. They are only slightly raised and are more like areas of thicker / dry skin.

They don't get any better or worse when ridden.

The hair is growing normally over them.

I have been bathing him the last few days under the saddle area, when he has been worked, and keeping the saddle cloth very clean but they don't seem to be going.

Any ideas as to what they are or how to get rid of them?

We've got a horse who gets similar sounding lumps whenever he has barley in his feed - have you changed his feed recently? It's amazing how many mixes and cubes have unadvertised barley in them

Check out my recent post on crusty lumps.

Same thing, lumps to start, then they went a bit crusty. I think it may be an allergy to the type of shavings as they get worse every time I added this certain make. I also ended up clipping out as I thought it may be due to getting too hot. All I can say is that the hair hasn't dropped off and we're back to almost normal.
All I've done is worry(!), hibiscrub the area every day & like you wash the numnah after every use in non-bio.

They could be eosinophilic granulomas-I think usually a reaction to heat/sweat in the saddle area. You could try washing the area with Malaseb shampoo and keep changing your numnah so it doesn't stay sweaty - also use a mild soap powder to wash them. The lumps went away after time on my mare, but I always clipped out her saddle area in the winter and kept it clean and dry.
Actually one lump grew quite big and was removed under local
anaesthetic but I think that this was unusual. It wasn't a major problem for her anyway.:)

My mare has these and they don't cause a problem, in fact they had almost disapeared until changed the chaff at which point I found that my girls are made worse if there is too much alfalfa in her diet.

My pony had these, the saddler thought it was acne as he is only 5 but i took him off alpha oil and they are going so they were obviously protein lumps.

my lad gets something very similar during the hunting season, and we've been told that it's most likely a reaction to a sweaty numnah over a long day. We keep his numnak squeaky clean (and he wears a wool one not a cotton one as they seem to be worse), we keep his saddle patch clean (hot dettol cloth or hibiscrub washed after each ride) and we use talc under the saddle. We put the talc on his withers, and along 3 inches or so of his spine, then put the numnah on and by the time we untack the talc has covered his saddle patch.

no sign of the lumps this year!

Hi My horse has these lumps and at a local visit to my vets i enquired about them and was told that they were midge fly bites that had calcified and are quite common and will disappear with time

They are saddle sores just hard skin forms like on our heels from wearing flip flops they usually just go on their own.
