Lumps of 'molasses' type substance in Winergy Low

I had always assumed,having read the blurb on the website, that Winergy Low would have no added sugar. Recently the bags I was using had lumps of what seemed to be lumps of a solid molasses type of material in them,some quite large.

When I read the bags in more detail one of the ingredients was Molglo, or something like that, so in fact they are actually adding sugar? Presumably.

I haven't fed it for a while now, much as I liked it, but having read the thread on Molassed chaff thought I'd ask if anyone else had found this in theirs?

Was in more than one bag from different batches.
 
I know the stuff you mean - it's in all the Winergy feeds that I've fed, I don't believe it's pure molasses though, I was told it was a grass nut type substance. Its certainly the same colour/consistancy as grass nuts.

I'm sure Winergy would tell us what it is if we emailled them.

Molglo is a 'low sugar' blend of molasses and oil. 'Low sugar' is relative to full sugar molasses, however. Molglo is still very high in sugar. Also watch out for molaferm (another molasses based substance).
 
Molglo is a mixture of molasses and soya oil touted as a low sugar sweetener.

Straight molasses has a listed sugar content of 47% and Molglo 40% :rolleyes:.

I will let you draw your own conclusion from that......:eek:

Never rely on the 'blurb' - always read the ingredients list and the analysis as well. And watch out for the things they don't say - for example, if they make a big thing of saying a feed is low starch but don't mention the sugar content, then wise to check it (and vice versa).

According to Dengie, Molglo is a 'patented mix of soya oil and molasses'.
 
Regardless of whether its molasses or molglo if something only has say 5% sugar then it's still low in sugar, right? It's the overall amount that's the important bit.

Need to look at NSC content as a whole - so that is sugar AND starch.

Plus all feeds are not created equal.

Happy Hoof only has an acceptable 7% NSC content - but the amount of hoof problems I find with it are ridiculous.

On the other side of the coin, Fast Fibre has a higher level of 7.5% - yet it appears (mostly) hoof friendly :confused:
 
I feed soaked grass nuts and the things I found were very certainly not grass nuts. I am usually quite good at payng attention to labels and reading websites, however I do know, having looked this morning, that the nutritional info includes the starch level but not the sugar.

Time to enquire I think.

I did have an email from them with the sugar and starch contents of the entire range but I cant find it now, typically!

I've always found them to be very open about nutritional info and ingredients, I'm sure they will help.

I was feeding Growth a few weeks ago and it had those lumps in it, but they dissolved when dampened and left to 'soak'.

Growth has the lowest sugar/starch combo, I think it was abot 12-13% total...

Definitely contact the manufacturers for further info. The more people ring and email manufacturers regarding standard info such as sugar and starch levels, the more likely they are to start publishing the figures on their websites, bags and publicity material. Starch/sugar levels are not part of the compulsory declaration of analysis that manufacturers must make, so will not necessarily be on the tag of paper stitched into the bag.
 
This happened to me and I sent samples of the "lumps" back to Winergy. They refunded and compensated me. The lumps should not be there and were put down to a problem during mixing ingredients.
 
This was happening a lot a while ago particularly in the Condition, some of the lumps were tennis ball size & that's BIG when there's more than one in a 15kg bag!!

I contacted Winergy who advised it was Molglo and that it could be caused by a build up in the machine that releases the Molglo, they sent me vouchers to refund all the bags I'd bought that had these lumps in.

They also emailed a huge explanation about Molglo/molasses/sugar/starch etc so are really helpful & open about their ingredients.

I stopped using Winergy for a while after this but have recently gone back to it & I'm so pleased I have :D
