Hiya, I've got a 14 year old, Welsh Section B mare who has everyone including the vet baffled.
She came in around 3 weeks to a month ago with two saggy 'lumps' on just before her teat on the left side. She was also very tucked up, but fine in herself. The next day the lumps had 'filled' slightly and were less saggy, and there was a lump not on her left teat, but next to it, in between her two teats but looking like it was attached to the left and not really affecting the right.
We tried an allergy cream thinking it was just something as simply as she'd rolled in stingys, but that didn't make any difference.
The lumps them continued to go in number and size, they'll squish if you press them but they're not hard at all, and by the end of the first week there was about 5 of them.
We called the vet out and the vet had no idea but said it could be something like she did roll in stingys and now it's a bit of an infection, so she was put on antibiotics for a week.
There was still no difference and the lumps continued to grow and her veins on her left side around her teat have become enlarged and backed up, with all of the lumps looking as if they're at the end of these veins.
Got the vet out again and vet has no idea still, so now she's on a steroid gel/cream for 3 weeks applied directly onto the lump on the teat because the vet thinks it could be that that's the problem and causing the veins to block up.
I looked at them this afternoon (I check them twice a day) and they just look worse to me, her veins look more aggravated and the lumps look bigger and have multiplied again.
I was wondering if anyone had ever experienced anything similar and or had any idea what it could be?
It's only affecting the left side around her teats, they're not at all painful to her (you can press them and she's not bothered, and she's fine in herself) and there's nothing coming out of the teat.
Next step is to take a sample and investigate but thought I'd post here first.
