Hi,
Does anyone have any expereince of lumps onj hosres back? Mine has lumps on both sides, covered in hair, not painful to touch but seem to be increasing in amount and size. Vet saw them a few months ago when they were smaller and said nothing to worry about quite common, saddle fitter said same thing but advised me to hot wash them to try and openthe pores. I am just debating this advice. They seem to be increasing in number and joining up and are really unsightly. Anyone offer anything form their expereinces o this sort f thing. I dont know what to do. Thanks.

are they small scapy ones all over saddle area and below ? my mare gets these i give them a good scrub in hibi-scrub and warm water to get all the scaps of they have been their most of the winter they seem to get better more she was clipped.

I have seen these on one horse in our yard, they seem to cause no problem, but if they are increasing it is time to do something.
After work, I think you could use a Lavender wash, I find this helps any skin condition but is ubber mild. http://www.animalmedicationdirect.co.uk/lavender-wash-barrier-500ml-1l-5l-pr-5075.html
I don't know if he has a sensitive skin, if so I would suggest a supplement, or micronised linseed.
Make sure numnah is clean and only wash in a non bio stuff, then rinse well.

I find it difficult to believe they are always insect bites, the horse I am thinking off never goes out without a rug, is stabled most of the time, and rugged most of the time.
I would leave them alone, but treat as sensitive skin problem. Avoid Hibiscrub type of cleansing, make sure you read directions on anything you use.

Exactly the same thing happened to my mare. Our vet said it was reaction to fly bites and the dead skin cells under the skin is what the lumps are. They seemed to get better but after riding they would be huge! We got a steroid cream off the vet which has pretty much made them disapear in about 4 days!

One of my horses has got these, the vet said it was an over reaction to insect bites and the collagen in the skin has hardened in the bite site, nothing can be done unless they are causing a pressure point whilst being ridden, then they can be taken out surgically.
Also there's bacterial foliculitis which looks similar to the collagen lumps but has a circular scab smack bang in the middle of the lump, these are generally in the saddle area and are caused by dirty tack and pads being used, to treat that you need to get antibacterial wash (selene) from the vets and wash everything after every use.
My lad(he was a rescue) had both conditions at the same time :(

Thanks for all replies. Its a strange condition. I have bene trying to wash with warm water after exercise using Barriers lavender wash. Done it for past two days. No difference yet. Some hair loss on one side now which i think is due to saddle rubbing them. There seems to be mixed opinions on what they could be. Neither vet or sadlle fitter mentioned fly bites. One erson said they equivalent of corns on humans feet. Layers of skin basically. They are getting bigger and more of them. Thats my concern. Thanks for advice. Any more please add to post. x

My pony gets lumps like that on his back, i gave him a hot cloth today and they came off, they were greasy hard lumps under his coat his had them for ages and he is bathed quiet regularly and ive never been able to get them off before.

my girl gets them, they dissapeared in the winter but she has a couple back again, not sore just small hard lumps, vet said nothing to worry about so i dont, i just make sure all numnahs are washed regularly

One of mine gets them every year exactly this time of year. Hard lumps in saddle area, she had one last year the size of my foot!! Never effect her perfomance or under saddle. Vet said could be collegen lumps like said in previous posts or a reaction to the Spring grass. They always go in about June time and completely dissapear in the winter. Vet said best to leave them be and not bother with Steroids as can make it worse.
