hi, one of my horses came in from the field with lumps over body pea size , suspected fly bite reaction , has had fly rug on and flhy spray. were over back, belly and neck, no bleeding from them, no change in diet and not been moved into a new field, he is usually so sensitive and doesnt react this much usually, lumps went down , turned out for a few hours in turnout rug yesterday , this am no lumps jumped him this am and then again turned out with a rug again today , tonight covered in lumps again , pea size on body, neck and round girch atrea also, any ideas much appreciated xx

Grass allergy? Would make sense with the flush of grass, don't know much about it just the first thing that springs to mind :)

Lumps can be caused by a few different things but as you suspect it probably is the midges. When I was feeding my boy tonight he really was kicking at his belly as swishing his tail with the flys :(

Last summer around august time when all the farmers around me where harvesting etc my previous horse came in with what looked like nettle rash all over his body. I kept an eye on him and the rash disappeared but resulted in little scabs that when picked off his hair came with them. He had bald patches all over him! Invested in a proper Boet rug and he was fine. Not sure whether the harvesting bought out different flies that caused this poor boy!

Just sounds like an allergic reaction to flies, may be a certain fly hence why the horse doesn't get it all the time.

My horse has this its known as nodular skin disease and doesn't cause any problems. The lumps will come and go, I tend to keep my mare in her fly sheet for the whole summer to reduce the amount of lumps she gets.

sounds like what my poor boy is suffering from- fly bites.

he is suffering atm, fly spray twice a day helps, and i have just got his fly rug delivered today, with a belly flap on it as his belly looked like he had measles! :(
