Hello again! Haven't been on here in ages, been in NZ for a couple of months and got back a couple of weeks ago!

My sisters horse has lumps all over his neck, and quite a lot of his body as well, very noticeable. It started when some different shavings were used, not the usual ones, think they were finer than normal, and he came up in lumps everywhere. The died down on their own, and after giving him a new bale of shavings again last week, the same thing has happened. This bale is the normal stuff we use and he's never had a reaction before. He's 5, and not the kind of horse to become very allergic to anything. We were going to phone the vet and get some anti-histimines (sp?) and see what else they can do, although it doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest. Just wondering if anyone else knew what to do? Any good medications? Thanks!

There is no such thing as anti histamine for horses as I found when my horse had swollen legs due to an allergy. The lumps are also an allergic reaction to something they eat usually have u changed the hay?

Mine used to get urticaria all the time till we moved yards.
Vet did gave me Ucerax which is a sedating antihistimine but it's not available over the counter.
When he was very bad he would also give a steroid injection (Dex) which does clear the lumps instantly.
However they will come back if you don't remove the trigger.

In the end he went up to horspital for tests and they found 15 triggers. They told me there that typically allergies manifest for the first time in young horses and they no idea why some horses suddenly develop allergies where they didn't before.
With mine lots of types of wood were an issue so we had to take him off shavings and put him on straw.
