My young TB mare has started to get lumps under her saddle, just off the centre of her spine, after being ridden. I have had her back checked, had three saddlers out to fit new saddles, changed her numnah to sheepskin etc and nothing has helped. If anything they are getting worse! They do not yet appear to be causing pain and are not in a place where the saddle is in contact with, they disappear after a couple of hours. Does anyone know anything that may help??

could it be sweat causing the problem - have you tried changing soap powder you wash numnah in (fairy snow non bio is meant to be good or pure flakes) x

Could be many things: sweat lumps, a bacterial or viral infection.
If they disappear and dont aggrevate her probably nothing to worry about. I'd speak to your vet as may give you a wash to try.

How often do you wash you saddlecloth/numnah?

What do you wash them with? That is the usual reason for these allthough if they are getting worse I would contact your vet

Possibly sweat, make sure use wash your numnahs frequently in non bio.
Could possibly be the same problem i have with my big lad in that his skin reacts to rider/saddle pressure so i have to ride in a GelEze pad.
Since doing so i dont have any problems with lumps. But i still have to keep him clean and washed off after every ride as hes allergic to sweat too.

Doubt its the same prob ive been having with my youngster, his was a reaction to fly bites and he got a secondary infection which has now cleared up after nearly 8 wks!!

I had the vet out for lameness recently, but while he was there I asked him to look at the lumps on my horse's back, which sound very similar to yours.

The lumps emerged after I bought a new saddle, which was very annoying. I got the saddler out, and the saddle has been adjusted, and I'm assured it fits. Anyway, the lumps are still there.

Vet said it's a combination of the pressure of the saddle and sweat/heat. There's not much you can do about them, and they may not go away, but they don't usually cause too much of a problem. (There are injections and stuff to get rid of them, but he didn't really recommend that)

He did recommend a gel pad (a la Gel Eze) and/or a wool numnah. And he said to make sure the numnah is kept clean, and any sweat is washed or groomed off regularly.

my pony started getting them a little while ago, i got him a sheeps wool numnah and it seems to have helped. i think it is probably due to sweat, all i can suggest is that you try a really absorbent numnah.

they do still appear with a wool numnah, although they are reduced a little. had vet out last week to check her and she got the all clear-very confusing!

sound quite similar to what my lad has got.... i had the vet out to do his vaccinations and asked him to check them at the same time

he said they seemed like collagen (sp?) lumps from pressure from the saddle, but said that were nothing to worry about.

it is unlikely to be your saddle if yor neddy is still happily working and is showing no pain in her back.

they seem to be dissaperaing slighly now his sumer coat is coming through...

make sure you sponge his saddle area off after you ride just incase it is a reaction to sweat, seems to be working for me
