Hi, Our 15hh grey mare has suddenly come up with lumps and bumps, a bit like hives all over each sides of her 'barrel'?????!!!!!
confused.gif

we have tried her with less rugs as it may have been that she was too hot but this still didnt work?
no changes in diet have occured and they are boviously not hurting her as she does not seem aggitated about them?
advice.....???
Thanks

It could be because of the new grass coming through. Dont know how exactly but it sometimes causes bumps to come up, particularly around barrel area

Not sure if I have the same problem but my experiences might help ypu...

My boy has come up with a load of hard bumps under the saddle area this week . Not painful at all and nothing changed in his diet at al other than grass coming through.

Am really scratching my head about it .. I rang the saddler today (she reflocked the saddle about 3 weeks ago) and she said unliekly to be the saddle as it was 3 weeks ago - more likely to be a reaction to a dirty numnah or washing powder in a clean numnah or sweat glands being blocked combined with coat changes. The bumps came up one day after a hack out where he got quite hot but not overly so I am guessing its the sweat gland thing plus coat changes althoguh he has got hot plenty of times before. A week later and no riding and they still havent gone, washed with hibiscrub today.

The saddler also said immediately when I said bumps - have you wormed him recently? as apparently a lot of horses react to the group of wormers with main ingredient which starts with a 'b' ..... (sorry cant remember / pronounce it)

So could be grass, worming, washing powder reaction, dirty numnah/rug, too hot, moulting coat or sweat glands........or even fly bites I guess - sorry, that doesnt help at all I guess!

My mare is covered in bumps. First I thought it was something she has eaten as she has had access to a conifer hedge that previously was fenced off.
Therefore kept off pasture for a whole week, lumps got worse couple of days later, in the end had vet out to give Steroid injections. This cleared it up for a couple of days, however after turning her out for a few hours she developed more lumps, this time they were more towards the saddle area where previously they had been on the shoulders. This meant that I couldn't ride as they were obviously uncomfortable and were hot to touch. Ended up with a cold sponge trying to give her some relief.
Have changed fields now so no Conifer - however still have lumps on belly both sides and a small patch on front of her chest. So now not sure what it is, am trying to hold off getting vet trying to cure it myself.
Have tried her on Children's Bendryl - found a suggestion on line to give a bottle of the stuff to help with Allergies - seemed to help take some of the heat away but not gone.
Numnah etc have all been washed using Eco Balls so no powder.
Hasn't been wormed for a bit so not that.
Is fully clipped or was 4 weeks ago so not moulting.
Fly bites - at the time was fully rugged and they don't have heads.
Am currently working on the too hot theory - have replaced deep litter bed with a thin bed, and have drastically lowered amount of rugs she has on. Where possible been turning out with nothing. Have also taken her off hard feed for nearly a week - saw no change in lumps.

Might be interesting to note though that both time's she had bad reactions I had been hunting the day before and she had got very hot - but was washed down on returning home. Not sure if this may be a factor but that was almost a fortnight ago and still have lumps.

Have now bought some Super Soothe Aloe Vera cream to rub on and am hoping that will work.

If any one else has any more thoughts I'm at the stage where I'd try almost anything.

Hi,

I'm a equine sports massage therapist and I have had 2 clients (horses!!) who have had a similar reaction. Both were allergic reactions. The first horse is allergic to washing powder, shampoo and generally most forms of detergent, his problem is ongoing and has been for over 6 months and his owner is just really careful and they seem to manage it fine.
The second horse was really poorly and lethargic when it all very suddenly started, she was on antihisimines which only helped slightly and had loads of blood tests. Her blood tests came back with the result that she was allergic to 10 types of grass. At the time the vets didn't hold out much hope that her quality of life in the future would be good. Anyway, after about 3 weeks they started to go down and 4 months down the line she is back to normal and healthy again. Both cases were made much worse when they were hot and even in winter (and they are both thin skined) they faired much better without rugs. Incidently, in both cases they had both had doses of antibiotics for infections about 2 weeks before they flared up. Might just be coinsidence but both owners seem to think this is significant.

Not sure if any of that helps but thought it might!

Thanks all i have given her human antihistimine and she now is in a fly sheet most of time!

she only goes out in a sand paddock as we dont have acess to grass paddocks... :P

is your neddie fully clipped? mines been coming out in bumps, i decided it was heat rash,. what i actually think it is, is coat change reacting when he its hot.

ive found tree tea gets rid of the lumps., i hose him as soon as hes finished work, then put 2 lid fulls of a small bottle of oil into some was and sponge him.

then.. if any lumps appear, i use the tree tea blemish stuff and rub in..

A tip for washing numnahs and human clothes that is great for eczema and other reactions. Use a non-bio detergent at half the recommended amount and then instead of using fabric conditioner - use a capful of distilled vinegar.

My husband and daughter used to get occasional patches of eczema, they haven't since I changed to this approach. The vinegar doesn't smell on the clothes and the clothes still come up lovely and soft.

My horse gets bumps all over him too, he has been fine over the winter but they have started in the last couple of weeks. From what I can work out, it is heat sensitivity - the areas where he is clipped do not show the lumps. It is on his bum etc where he is blanket clipped.

Thanks for that. The Aloe Vera seems to be working at the moment. So am applying very liberally twice a day to all the lumps. Already used 1/2 a tub - ordered more.
Washing powder wise we use Eco Balls so no powder.

She is fully clipped so lumps appearing on clipped bits.

Have drastically cut how I was rugging her incase it's heat related. Turned out today with no rug and it was a lot colder/ windier than weather forecast said - as result bought in shivering. BUT on a good note lumps had gone down quite a bit - so maybe it's heat related!!

However she gets very hot/ worked up when exercised so could be an interesting one if it is heat related!

My mare has been covered in hot, painful spots which were mainly in the saddle area. She has been fine in herself but I couldn't ride for a few days because the spots were too bad and she actually tried to get me off by plunging across the arena which is totally unlike her.

Her next-door neighbour has also had a hot, itchy rash and also a lady who comes for lessons said that her horse had the same rash in the same area i.e. saddle area. I've just been bathing with Hibiscub solution and the spots are now on the wane and the heat has gone. I have no idea what caused the reaction. Hope your girl improves soon.

Just had another thought - my horse is a grey and so is one of the other spotty ones and it looks as if yours is too. Any connection I wonder?

dont rule out feed allergy, barley is one of the most common causes of lumps and bumps and you can feed it for years with no reaction and they can suddenly start reacting to it, you dont need to have changed feeds. Check for barley content in your feeds and take out anything with barley in. If it is a food allergy, the lumps and bumps will start subsiding just over a week after you have cut it out and they will get worse before they get better as the body fights to get it out of horseys system.
yes if she came in shivering the lumps would have subsided! recommended treatment is bute in low dose to help with inflammation and cold hosing on lumps themselves and dont let her get sweaty and hot as the lumps will get bigger and itchier and drive her crazy!

My mare came up in hives on the sides of her barrel after being clipped, I narrowed it down to being fleece rugs

Have now removed all fleece types from her wardrobe!

Saw Farrier at weekend and apparently he's been seeing a lot of lumpy horses this year. He didn't mention what colour they were through.
Mine is Skewbald - lumps are most prominent on White bits but also have some on brown patches. Aloe Vera seems to be helping using twice a day. Didn't ride when they were really bad as they were very sore to the touch - didn't want to make them worse.

Have been trying to keep her calm when ridden so she doesn't get too hot - just doesn't work the more you try the worse she heats up.
Will just have to keep monitoring her and hope it clears up in it's own time.

Have considered giving her a trace clip - not sure this would help? Fully clipped her legs yesterday as they were very hairy so hopefully that will cool her down a bit.
Would have given her another full clip but there isn't enough growth on her belly to do another. It's really quite strange as she has quite a bit of growth on her bottom and neck!!
But the lumps are on the bit that has less hair!!
