Got my horse in from the field on Saturday to discover he was covered in lumps and bumps, all over his sides and under his belly. What could it be ?

Some said rain scald after Fridays dramatic downpoor but wouldn't that be mainly on his rump and back ? There are no lumps on these bits of him ! Am thinking looks more like he has rolled in nettles or something but I know there is nothing like that in his field !

Am spraying him with tea tree mist

Could be protein lumps. My mare had then when i went to look at her before i bought her and they were caused by eating haylage rather than hay.
Possibly an allergic reaction to something?

Sounds like utecaria (sp) to me. Could be a reaction to the grass/nettles etc. The bumps should just go down but if you're really worried the vet can give an antihystamine to help get ride of them.

Mines had it several times during his life and they always just go down without any trouble.

Urticaria= an allergic reaction to something. They should go down quite quickly if nettles, if still up now are more likely to be from a food intolerance, like barley/cereal bumps; have you changed his diet recently?

Our mare came in on Saturday with that many fly bites on her neck (other bits covered by fly rug) that it was like braille - despite stupid amounts of spray.

Has he been bit by insects? As last horse I had used to react like this when bit by certain insects. If so plenty of Aloe Vera helps soothe it.

Thanks - so in general then whatever it might be sounds pretty harmless?

Haven't changed his diet at all which is what I would have thought it looked like a reaction to something he'd eaten but can't see how. He doesn't seem bothered by them and still happy to be ridden etc as the saddle area is 'lump free' . Will carry on with squirting him with my tea tree, aloe vera and cammomile spray and see how it goes

My mare gets this along her neck and sides. Sometimes really bad, other times just a few here and there. I've come to the conclusion that it's a heat rash with her. Tried cutting out various feed components and it didn't make a difference.

Worst I've seen it is when she was left with a rug on when she really didn't need it. Poor girl looked like bubble wrap under the rug area and up her neck when I discovered and took it off.

Doesn't seem to bother her, she's no itchier than normal or anything.

I've found a nice cold hose or sponge down helps.

So it's something else to consider as well as the food/nettles theories which are all very valid also!

mine gets this too, sometimes its obviuosly bites, sometimes i think he's eaten something in the hedge thats not agreed with him
