Lumpy Bumpy Itchy Horsie

Any advice please

My horse is all lumpy and bumpy ...

He always has a few bumps and never really seem to bother him but in summer he gets allergic to fly spray and he gets a bad reaction to fly bites...

Now he has been clipped 3 weeks ago and was very itchie and swishy and uncomfy after this i hot clothed few times and this went down the other day saturday i used main and tail and he came up in hives !! these have gone down where i sprayed now but he seems to be getting lumpier and lumpier ... ive changed rugs extra incase its what there washed in ect...

He is fed alfa oil ready mash and i also feed him veggie oil and copra meal for skin and coat

i often give him a human allergy tablet i spoke to vet yesterday and she said i need to give him 18 x 2/3 times a day so me and all family have gone out toget all the local supplies of tablets to see if this helps vet seemed to think small chance it will but often it doesnt work in horses..

I think she advised if it gets worse i could have then out and he would prob be but on steriods i really dont like the sound of this sounds expensive and unnatural but if its the only answer then i will go down this route just thought i would ask if anyone else knows of anything else i could try before getting vet out.

He doesnt seem himself at the mo either not happy bunny ...

I have brought some NAF LOVE THE SKIN HE`S IN spray to see if it will calm the itch down for him

Hi there my lad has really bad rainscold i got him in a bit of a state and hes coming right now - i know its not the same but it make him really sensitive on his skin. i got some dettol and nice warm water and some salt with aloe vera spray - recipe from friend - i washed him in the dettol (diluted obviously) and salt solution let him dry and then spray him in the aloe spray its really helped mine i keep spraying him with the aloe vera spray and its helped loads.

Its more allergic reaction than just itchieness but thank you he has lumps and rash all over him .... and is fully clipped no lice

stormy gale thanks i will try this sounds soothing just hope he not alllergic to dettol hahah .... have been advised to try vinagar too something to do with balancing ph but scared to use that .

I would just say be cautious on how much copra you are feeding - that has 21% Protein in it and it was too much for my WB. Excess protein can come out in a number of ways such as lymphangitis and abscesses.

Thats a really good point id missed that ! my horse had an awful reaction to a balancer - wont name but was terrible reaction and that was due to too much protein i have to be really careful - - the dettol will be kinder and help balance too thats what i was told - little less stingy than vinegar too! think the combo of taking him off that and nice bath will help.

I had a problem with allergies for a long time, first vet thought it was food related and recommended we cut out alfalfa which is very high in protein, feeding both that and copra would be alot of protein. In our case we took him back to nothing but soaked hay and turned out not to be food. But to do food elimination you take them back to nothing, then add things one at a time. Mixes are tricky as are balancers because you are adding lots of things at once and it may only be one ingredient that's problematic.

With mine, turned out not to be food, took him to hospital for testing and they cleared overnight despite being on the same food. testing found 15 triggers including various woods and he had to have straw not wood based bedding. It seemed that once his immune system was sensitised, more and more things set him off so I worked on supplements that helped boost his immune system and things improved a bit.

They went when I moved yards and I could reintroduce some things back.

However when he had to go to hospital this year he had to be bedded on shavings. He was clipped round his shoulder where they operated and he came up in lumps only where he was clipped where the shavings directly touched his skin, his coat obviously provided some protection.

Great advice thank you i have recently move him on to alfa oil and took him off just grass maybe that is something to do with it going to have to give him something to put these 18 tablets in hahahah but bedding it could be !!! i bed him on shaving and chop straw ... we have a straw ban on yard maybe i should try this though and see if i can speak to management. could you use chop straw ??? x

If you are bedding him on a mixture you could try one then the other. But try and be systematic with your changes. So let's say you take out alfalfa and he seems to improve. You then try reintroducing a little and then withdrawing to confirm it's the issue.

My vet gave a steroid injection of Dex (can't remember the full name) which calmed everything down but of course it all came back until we solved the underlying issue and wasn't a long term solution.
