Sorry this is a long one!

So to give a whole picture, on Wednesday 27th we noticed a little cloudiness in the horses eye, vet came the next day, and was reasonably happy to prescribe Dexamethasone gel to go in his eye as there was no surface scratches, and Bute because he was sucking his eye in a bit. Grand.
At this point we had just come in for a few days to allow the farmer to fertilise the fields, so he was in the stable 24/7, with either a hack out or a run round the indoor at each end of the day.
Then on Saturday morning he comes out in these hives, all over down his shoulder, sheath, belly. I washed him in hibiscrub at this point and turned him out as it was the first morning we could go back out but he came in hives BEFORE he went out so not reacted to a plant in the field. I had sort of put it down to having opened a new bale of hay - though this hay comes off his winter grazing field!
Expected it to go down on its own, it didn’t spoke to vet who suggested huge dose of antihistamines twice a day.
Still no better after 2.5 days so vet comes again on the Tuesday, gives a dex injection, says he anticipates it going within 24hrs from this. Also to turnout 24/7 If possible and keep him cool.
Yep you guessed it, not gone. Was slightly better the morning after but then he’s actually come up with some in new places in that time! Vet back out yesterday very bemused, and has given us 3 days of oral dex to see if a consistent use helps.
Now the lumps are quite hard and he’s itching like mad in the field!
Vets mentioned in passing allergy testing the lumps to see what he is reacting to but basically said it’s expensive and not hugely reliable! Plus once you know he’s allergic you may not be able to avoid it!
( if anyone has done this let me know! )

There is nothing new I can think of that could’ve caused this no new food, nothing washed, no new straw, no sprays or washes or anything.

Has anyone ever experienced such a thing? I’m tearing my hair out!
I do rather think he’s realised I’ve fixed the tyre on the trailer and booked an eventing camp for June!

After an ongoing issue with one of my horses with hives, my first port of call with anything like this is a course of prebiotics.

The staying in, farmer spraying field, stress of the eye injury, bute etc. May well have impacted his hind gut.

We tried everything over a course of two years; washing, antibiotics, steroids, allergy testing etc. And it was prebiotics that made the improvement and then the Equibiome test and protocol that actually sorted it out.

Me!

I did pay for the allergy testing, it cost a bomb. BUT we discovered BB is allergic to soya and alfalfa. Before he came to me I guess he was on very basic cheap stuff.
He did have an allergic reaction and he too had hives all over his body. Antihistamines do work but after a few days of taking them, they start to go down and he returns to normal.

He also takes an allergic reaction to something around this time of year, runny nose and hives. I start giving him antihistamines in the middle of april and will just keep giving them till September. If you are buying in bulk get the cetirizine from amazon, 😊

My boy started coming out in seasonal hives two years ago. Tried short acting and long acting steroids to no avail. Maloseb takes the heat out of them. Beyond that I’ve taken to leaving them alone as they don’t seem sore or itchy. If anyone has a solution I’d love to know 🥺
