My gelding was vaccinated (flu & tet) yesterday, he was also sedated and fully clipped, was fine last night & this morning, but when he came in tonight he was really lumpy/bumpy, head shaking and irritable. Called the vet who suggested its likely to be a reaction to either the clipping or vaccination (vacc looking most likely as most bumps/sensitivity around the vaccination site) gave a couple of Danilon & keeping my fingers crossed its gone in the morning. Anyone else experienced this? vet did say what it was called, began with an 'e' and likened to nettle rash in humans.

He seemed calmer when I left and was happily munching on his haynet, nothing but worry! Bloody animal!

Not experienced this but NAF do a skin wash designed for hot towelling that deals with this kind of thing, some horses are allergic to clipper oil. You even get the towel with it ;)

Thanks, it looking more likely to be a reaction to the vaccination, the majority of the lumps are around the injection site. I did a hot cloth wash after the clip with a diluted dettol rinse, plus he didn't react to the clipper oil a few weeks ago when we got half his coat off... Before hospitalising my friend clipping him!! But will look into the naf stuff next time I clip him.

If a horse has a small area of skin where a infection Is lurking clipping is a great way of spreading it all over the horse .
Wash the blades with hibiscrub just in case you spread something to the next horse.
But it sounds like an vacc reaction.

Definitely not an infection that's been spread, it's very much a reaction... Likened to that of stinging nettle rash in humans. He's much better this morning, still lumpy around the vaccination site and other bits of his neck, but now cleared up on the rest of his body... Phew!

Sound like a reaction to the vaccine, my loan pony reacted really badly to a pain killer vet gave her for colic. It was close to an instant reaction throwing herself off walls and dragging herself across the floor. When I got close she had like you describe as nettle rash similar to Hives so vet had to come back with steroid injection to counter it. Make sure you and your vet eep a record of what your horse was given so you can use an alternative vaccine next time or be prepared with steroids etc to sooth the reaction.

Sounds like your horse wasn't too distressed but still it wouldn't have been comfortable...poor toot. They do like to stress us owners out don't they.

Please don't worry my old pony used to be sedated for clipping & a couple of times he ended up looking like he had the mumps the day after. My vet advised me beforehand that some horses seem to have a reaction but l never asked why as i was too horrified with sering my beloved pony looking like a lumpy monster. The lumps disappeared quite quickly within a day or two. He sadly passed away but l've never experienced this since with my other horses l've had. If the lumps don't go in afew days & his rubbing due to irritation just contact your vet for their advice.
