I have recently been lucky in getting a young gelding who is already bringing me loads of pleasure.
I currently stable him on a DIY livery yard and have access to a 20x40 arena but I know that this is going to be too large when starting my youngster.

I am looking at setting up a lunge pen (about 15-16 meters/50 ft diameter) that is easy to put up and possibly easy to dismantle and move if needed and I'm hoping I'm not going to have to spend a fortune in purchasing one.

Does anyone have any idea where I could obtain one, either new or 2nd hand please.
I live in Bury, Lancashire.

Hope someone can help x

I am finding that he isn't concentrating and it is a bit more difficult loose lunging in such a large area. Just looking for something smaller for the more close up work.

most people who break and school only have a 20 by 40 school! cant see your problem really. but yes you could buy a pen if you have a spare 3 grand! but you wont use it for long! as it will be too small!!!!!

i made mine out of electric fencing. I know its not ideal for some horses but it was ok for mine. It wasnt electrified.

i break and school, im luckily enough to have a 20x40 and round pen and i can assure you the round pen gets some hammer! depends on the horse. you can avoid many issues and confrontations in the round pen and instil enough control and manners to ride thro an problems later on.

you can buy wire mesh fencing, 6foot high i think, off ebay fairly cheap. certainly not 3grand :-) make sure its tall enough!

Split the school in half? Corners can be rounded off with a few poles.
Does he have to be loose lunged?

Ofcourseyoucan, 3000 POUNDS for a round pen? Made of what?

Mine cost $1800 and it is used every day and no, it isn't too small for riding.

You could go for Stinkbomb's idea with fencing, if you get a roll or two of chicken wire or similar and some of the thin fence posts. it is fairly easy to put up and take down, just bang in the fence posts and wrap the wire round the outside with a gap to get in then put some fence tape round a bit higher. When you take it down you can roll up the wire and sell it!!

I have a purpose built round pen at the end of my school and I would not be without it! It takes some punishment and I would think that doing that in a school would damage the surface and underlay.

My roundpen is made of posts and electric tape - not electrified and it does get a bit of a hammering at times and have had to replace the odd post that herself has kicked in half - bless!
I have seen them work really well made out of straw bales stacked up three or four high and stacked through the middles to tie them together - really cheap and a good idea as they can't see out and tend to concentrate more on what is going on inside, they also can't injure themselves or break it!!

Thank you for your response, 'almorton' thanks for the idea I'll take a look now and see what is available. I know that it is going to get some use by a few people on the yard as there are a couple of youngsters at the yard and I am slightly concerned that the lunging will start to damage the sand arena that we have on the yard.

If all else fails I can always give 'stinkbomb's idea of fencing and see if that works.

Thanks again. If there are any other ideas then please let me know

I'm kind of with you on one point here.
I used to lunge in my school but it undermined the surface and so we built a lunge pen. Fencing is 6ft tall (shiplap timber) and its properly drained. Cost us no more than £1500 as we already had the sand from our old school.

Trouble is, with the horse going round and round, the surface does slip and its tricky to level such a small circle with anything other than a hand rake and lots of stomach muscles and blisters. Yes you can get a quad in but unless you have a small leveller on a fixed hitch, its impossible to get it around the edge.

We now lunge in the main arena again as its easier to level !!
