Lungeing Does anyone elses horse do this ?

My TB has taken to grabbing the lunge line between his teeth .....and then turning in towards me !

I try to just keep him going forward and out on a big circle but he just kept grabbing hold of it today and then moving it along through his teeth until he reached me !!
 
Clever horsie! hehe wondered how he figured that out xD

I knew of a horse who would grab the reins in his teeth and then try and turn round to go home, lol, a different type of napping...

Mine does everything but grab onto it, hes so clever though that i wouldnt be surprised if he started doing it to get out of work lol
 
Yes I did wonder who's in charge myself ! He is normally as good as gold to lunge (well he has a bit of a hooley to start and then settles). Have had trouble with my back lately, hence my lunging although today we didn't really get anywhere :-)
 
Not on the lunge but two of mine will grab the reins when I'm leading them and try and get into a tug of war game, normally when I'm leading them towards the school :D
I hope they don't get the idea on the lunge...not all that helpful and not as easy to correct!
 
try a cavason so its above his nose, and try and keep the line up a little bit so its (hopefully) out of his reach, try not to let it droop much else he will be able to grab it again. It may just confuse him enough to give you a few days of nice work before he figures out how to get out of that one too lol :)
 
Mine used to turn inward when she reckoned she`d had enough,rear right up and walk toward me on her hind legs,then drop down right by my side,very impressive.Done with no malice whatsoever,just her jokey way of saying "enough".

That's brilliant :)

How do you have the lunge line attached to him? I always lunge with a bridle on, with the line going through the nearside of the bit, up and over the poll, then down to the bit on the far side. Might be more difficult for him to grab the line?

Don't let your TB tell Mouse how to do that - I'd lose him completely ;)

I've got him voice trained pretty much perfectly - he'll even collect and extend in trot on the lunge but he'd rather not do any exercise, so if can get out of it he will . . . !!!
 
Mine hasn’t done that but walking in hand this morning her response to being prodded out of my space was to snatch the lunge whip out of my hand and twirl it round like a cheerleading baton…..mildly amusing but she got another prod for her cheek.
 
have you tried lungeing him in side reins? If you use non-elastic ones, they will help to keep him straight. Attach the lunge line to the inside bit ring (not over the poll, as this can cause head-tipping) and keep a contact with the bit so you can feel him working into the outside rein - then he should not be able to turn towards you. Alternatively, use a lunge cavesson to attach your line to, and try to not let it get slack. Then he should not be able to grab it!
 
A smear of mustard will stop him wanting to grab it a second time.

I found this worked on horses that grabbed things they shouldn't and mustard is easier to get off than the horsy anti-bite stuff.
