what kit do you tend to opt for when you are lungeing and why? just wondering really....i tend to use normal sidereins a lot but also use a pessoa too...
Blaze just has sidereins as he tends to snatch at his chest so anything that went between his legs would be liable to get caught
I like to lunge in running reins, less fixed than side riens and teach the horse to stretch forward and down. Not a huge fan of the pessoa, but did use it to teach Jerry to canter in a circle without falling over!
i use normal bridle ( for control!) with roller or saddle with side reins- the ones with the elastic inserts. i find the side reins replicate a good pair of riders hands with that little amount of 'give' in them and give the horse something to work with. sometimes i lunge with two lines on a horse to help keep them more active and hep them develop their own balance
side reins or bungee, but also enjoy lunging her with no tack at all - just bridle or cavesson. Can really see how they look and move without anything hindering. (I could stare at her for ever!!)
Draw reins over the back, through the front legs and clipped on both sides of the bit. It doesnt restrict the horse or haul them in, but gets them to reach down and engage their stomach muscles. Works brilliantly. Not a fan of the pessoa anymore as it can jab them in the mouth if they trip/shorten in the neck and the back bit goes lower on the horses back legs. Also like elasticated running reins, but again not hauling them in, fixed relatively loosely.
I haven't 'properly' lunged in years as my horse is a git on the lunge so there was never much point fighting with him.
But I have a new youngster and my instructor has been nagging me to lunge him in side reins. And I'm amazed at how much it helps him. I'm now a total convert and doing it every week....sometimes twice!
Sorry, off the topic I know but thought I would share!

i think i'm being thick...not sure how that works...don't suppose you have a pic?
No pic.... hm, think of a chambon, where the two "ends" with clips on come from between the horses legs and clip onto the bit? Its basically like that, except the drawrein is clipped on one side, goes through the horses front legs, over the horses back, under the elbow and back to the bit again, so both "ends" of the drawrein are clipped to the bit with the "rein" bit inbtween the horses legs and then over the back?!!
nah...my spatially useless head is not understanding
stupid brain
i want to try this coz i'm not 100% convinced with the pessoa but need an alternative but am fearful that this may end up with me decapitating my horse
i lunge with 2 reins- inside rein straight to me, outside line either crossing at the withers or around the quarters depending on horse and level of schooling.
works far better than any gadget i know, most of which let the horse sit behind the contact.
Just use a headcollar and lunging rein, boots if I think he is going to be an idiot.
To get him to stretch his head down and use his back I just do lots of transitions, spirals, 5m circle at walk into 20m circle trot/canter, back to 5m walk etc with the odd tap with the 'solid' end of the whip if he is being lazy.
When I can I lunge on a slope or on the flat incorporating part of a bank, great for developing balance and get the hocks engaged.
