Do people recommend lungie-bungies as a good lunging tool?
http://www.libbys-tack.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=72&cat=2&page=1

I want to start lunging my cob properly to start building up some more muscle and also because my horse finds it hard to have a consistent contact (partly reinforced by me moving my hands because he swings his head - I don't have this problem when riding on other horses!). I'm not a big fan of side reins and have heard mixed reviews of the passoa, but what about the lungie bungie?

Do you think it's also suitable to use when riding (I know on the website it says it is)?

I moved to the lungie bungie as i looked the look of it being used (the Fredericks use it a lot on Horse and Country) and my horse hated his pessoa with a passion. I really like it, it's a little like side reins but with a much more even, consistent contact and very easy to use and adjust, I'm a fan. Got mine on Ebay for about £12, someone was having a clear out, think they normally retail around £30. Just to double check, I am talking about the lungeing device made my Libbys, not the elastic rubber thing people also use to lunge which people call a bungie or a bungee. Just to add, I haven't had as much success in riding as lungeing as my horses schooling is not at the level where it helps in his ridden work(when riding it fits onto attachents which go onto the saddle D rings) and we are not at that stage with his carriage yet but lungeing it's great as it works him a little lower....hope all that waffling makes sense!

clipcloppop - Yeah I was just watching H&C
CLY - Yeah I mean the Libby's one too.

I just feel I should buy some lunging equipment (at moment I have only a cavesson and a lunge line!) and want to make a good investment. If people recommend it I might have a look on ebay (although maybe see if my instructor has one I could try out first). I didn't want to buy it though if people think it's a really bad idea - I just thought that the elastic made it a lot more fairer than side reins.

I use a chambon on mine which I realy like, I'm not sure how much it would help with the contact issues but I think it is really starting to make a difference to his topline. I only lunge once a week, and have only prob done it four times this year (since the ground dried out), and just for 15-20mins each time.

I bought that on ebay and was only about £10 I think, so may be worth getting one too? Would be a good idea to have an instructor or someone that has used them before to help you fit it though

The reason why vets and experts like pessoas so much is that anyone can use it; even if the horse "just poodles round" as my vet put it, it still has to keep its hocks underneath it - hence why some horses dislike it. Any other gadget, one has to ensure the horse is really powering forward to get similar benefit. The cheapest gadget of all is of course the tail bandage (noseband to tail).

I'm not sure about the above . . . not all vets and trainers are so enamoured of the Pessoa system, at least not in all hands and all situations. Like any other device that exerts force/leverage it can do damage used incorrectly or in inappropriate circumstances - as with all things, if it can affect the horse enough to do good, it can affect the horse enough to do harm.

I have had a physio says she hates the pessoa as she feels it compresses the horse due to the straps on back and front.

The chambon works in the similar way to the pessoa (I think? Have never really used one!!!), except as you said the horse has to be really moving forwards to make use of it.
