Does anyone know of a lunging aid that would suit my horse please? He doesnt like the pessoa in canter and will never get used to it, he bucks and goes disunited. I have tried daily for months with no reward. Also I find that it throws him on his forehand. Please know body tell me that I may not be using it properly as my horse has had a kissing spine op and was under my vet for ages using this gadget. I would like a lunging aid that will put him on the bit but not let him dive onto his nose. Any ideas please?? Thanks

Have you got draw reins?

Fantastic alternative to pessoa, especially for horses that wont tolerate the back straps....

Put the centre part of the draw reins over the wither, one end drops down the near side, the other the off side. These two ends go underneath the elbow and up to clip onto the bit rings

Just copied this from a site. Yes I cheated.

Chambon - A Chambon is designed to encourage a horse to carry his neck in a long and low position when on the lunge. The Chambon works by putting pressure on the horse's poll and lifting the bit upwards if the horse raises his head too high. A Chambon needs to be used with care - if you are not sure how to fit & use it correctly get some professional advice.

De Gouge - The De Gouge is an adaptation of the Chambon which can be used when riding, but the line carries on through the bit rings and attaches to the belly again, forming a triangle. It is not safe to jump in.

Or what about a running rein? My old instructor is using this with a youngster at the moment. Dont ask me how this works but the youngster is working with a higher head carriage, not long and low. I think it goes from the girth through the bit then to the front of the saddle, I think...

Re the Pessoa, my horse had the same problems as yours in canter. My trainer suggested I tried fixing the inside line between his front legs, and the outside line to the mid position (roughly where your knee would be if riding). You have to experiment a bit with the adjustment to get the length right, but I found he went much better. I think they find it easier with some support on the outside rein.

For some reason it gets them really round over the back, hocks coming through and nose stretches forward. If they resist they pull against their own back, none of them come hollow in them and there's nothing to lean on.

Does it not rub them underneath their front legs?? Do you not use a roller or anything? How would you adjust the length for different size horses?

Nope it doesnt seem to rub and there's no need for a roller (which is good as it saves time!)
If I need to shorten the draw reins I tie a knot in the centre and this stays at the wither, they dont move from side to side and the pressure stays even on both sides unlike running reins which can become tighter on one side

Im quite intregued but am slightly concerned about trying this as my horse can go mad on the lunge and concerned he may get rubs. Interesting though, many thanks for all your replys to my posts.

Normally you ride in draw and running reins (which are the same as Bossanova's diagram, but start at the saddle above the girth attachments at either side, go thru the bit rings to your hand. You ought to use them with another rein so you only use the draw/running reins when you need them...too much use can put your horse on its forehand/cause it to bend from the axis rather than the poll/rear.
De Gogue and Chambon are lunging aids, but both are designed for short term use (<3 weeks) because, you guessed, they put the horse on the forehand

The only way to get them up in front is to engage them behind, IMO, so send your horse forward more on the lunge, or ride him forward...
Hope this helps

Forgot to say, you can alter a De Gogue to ride with, too.
All these aids just position your horse's head and neck, but do nothing for the engagement/lightness of the forehand (unfortunately!)

I have used the draw rein tip for a stubborn old horse that used to have a high head carriage. On my current horse I use a bungee as I have tried pessoa but she freaks out

Bossanova,
Wanted to let you know i tried your lunging method today with the draw reins and it worked really well, she was going long and low and moving really well in no time. Thanks for the tip!
