Quick question.

Is there an effective alternative to lunging?

Lunging makes me extremely motion sick (i have tried tons of different techniques) to the point i am too anxious to try it again as i feel so unwell afterwards.

If i dont want to ride is there something else i could do to give my lad a work out that day?

Loose school? Obviously make sure arena is secure and he isn't going to jump out....(like my boy lol!)

Nd then doing in-hand work just :)

Totally agree. Free-schooling if he will do it without you having to drive him on. The only reason I say this is one of mine just does not get the concept and keeps trying to walk and join me:D

not sure how safe it is but if your horse is good to lunge u could try it ..... I have seen the "parelli" lot lunge standing still as horse goes round them - like I say I am not sure how safe this is though I tried it to see what the fuss was about as someone I know was ecstatic that their horse would do this - mine does it as just keeps going round.

Also dont lunge with a hangover !!! its hell

I would be interested in any suggestions too.

We also are not allowed to free school :( my boy loves this too :(

but he doesnt like or understand the idea of lunging, have had many trainers try to teach him but he still doesnt understand  poor lad would rather run around the arena backwards or on two feet than walk in a circle

Get and longer line and try and focus on the surroundings rather than always focusing on the horse, move around the school on the circle too that might help - failing that I think longreining is your next best plan.

Long reining is what I do as well although I do also use the parelli method if stand still and horse goes round or whats known as travelling circles and you walk in a straight line while horse is trotting etc round you.

My horse gets bored easily so I chop and change. I may stand still and get her going, then I'll walk down the centre line while pony continues travelling circles or I'll stop and spiral her shorter and longer to get her thinking, as well as doing transitions.

Long lining.

And, apologies if this sounds too obvious, but have you tried walking around when you lunge? E.g. if in a rectangular arena you walk in a sort of oval shape in the middle so you aren't just standing on the spot while horse makes a circle. It can help! (And, on a nice long line is easier on the horse.)

I have just bought a book on classical in-hand work from Amazon. Says it is good for all horses, not just the iberian breeds. Would definitely get you fit!! If interested, let me know and I will go and find out the title!
