Lunging - does anyone do it properly anymore?

Oh I wish it were open season on idiots just now !

Can someone tell me why a horse is lunged in trot and canter - well unbalanced gallop, and a near fall over at the one corner for over 40 mins in a pessoa - when its unfit, the school is as deep as a ploughed field and the circle is at best a funny shaped triangle - caused by horse falling in - and its doing the high school moves of approx 10 mtr circles.....

My back is aching just watching - well had no choice school is on way to the muck heap
why why why why ?

And no I would not dare say anything, had head ripped off last time I offered advice - so yes i am a coward !

You forgot the loud cracking of the whip a la the circus, and much shouting and screaming at the poor confused horse.

Mine works quite nicely in a headcollar - I can and do lunge using several different techniques, but equally, as long as he works in a reasonable frame in just a headcollar, then I'm happy to do so!

All of my horses are happy with a headcollar and a lungeline.
I do use a whip.. When I remember.. Which is rarely.
Theyre all rather good with words and actions.

I rarely ask for a canter on the lunge line. I do lots of trotting and transitions. Don't think I've ever lunged more than once a week or for more than 20 minutes though..

I see no point in lunging in just a headcollar, it does not school or work the horse and encourages incorrect bend in my opinion, I always lunge with bridle roller and bungee, although I agree most people have funny ideas about lunging.

Actually, assuming the headcollar doesn't slip into their eyes, you can work a horse, rather than just exercise, in just a headcollar on the lunge. You can work it long & low without anything very easily. Only way it encourages incorrect bend is if you are putting too much pressure on the lunge line. And it doesn't need to be a supremely well trained horse either, ime very green horses & unbroken ones will work long & low very easily without any gadgets.

I lunge in a bridle with a well fitting headcollar on top. The side reins go on the bit (after a warm up without) but the lunge rein is on the headcollar. I would use a caveson but my mare has a small delicate head and even the lightest is a bit heavy for her princess nose :o.

All mine lunge properly, what is the point otherwise, there is the occasional hooley  but it is not encouraged. I use longish side reins unless advanced but then never short, big circles, inward spirals (not often) and then send them down the longside for medium paces. Canter is mostly walk to canter once they have got to that level. Sessions are a max of 30 mins but that includes warm up/down and a fair bit in medium walk. It is amazing how many words they pick up, I only have to bark 'medium' and the walk shapes up of its own accord!

Can't bear horses racing about rubber necking, turning in, falling in or walking like a wet weekend.
