Concerned about roller slipping back when lunging should I use breastplate & side reins or just side reins

I use a plain racing breastplate and for babies also a cupper, just till they get used to something around the girth area, ESP as I think to take to put things comfy and not 'tight' so just in case there is any movement.

But older horses ESP big shouldered or big moving horses I stick the breastplate on
