Hi,

Do you think there is such a thing as a horse hating being lunged??

My horse has had everything checked (teeth, back, saddle etc), yet he has just started to suddenly want to kill you on the lunge, bucking, rearing and coming at you, I have only had him since June 2010 and he never done it before.

Is this just Spring and he is feeling good?

He is lunged once a week max, ridden 5 days a week which includes hacking, trotting poles/jumping and flat work with one day off.

Anyone else had this issue recently or before, if so what did you do?

Thanks

My 5 yo used to do it - we reckon he was full of beans, being a young b*gger and testing to see whose boss. I got help with it from my RI/YO, she did 4 lunge sessions with him for me as I hurt my shoulder when he flipped out and reared at me in the snow then tanked off. He soon realised he wasn't going to get away with being naughty and is now as nice as pie to lunge to the point where she borrows him to teach others how to lunge. She just challenged and chased him and wouldn't let him get away with his naughtyness.

He was terrible to send out and would refuse to go out and when he did he'd either buck or rear at you :( Then he'd motorbike round and rear/bronc/buck at you again, it was awful! He still goes nutty and motorbikes a bit if he hasn't been out but he is a saint to lunge otherwise!

Lunge him in double lines?? That way he can't come in on the circle and it's much easier to stop them bombing off. Just be careful if he bucks that he doesn't catch the outside rein.
