Hi everyone, this is my first post and came on here looking for your views on lunging over winter, the yard I am on is diy livery, our yard owner won’t allow us to lunge in the arena and wants us to use the fields. With the weather being as it is and fields really wet and getting quite muddy I’m unsure on this as my horse has just been Brocken and has been in a bit more lately due to weather, I’d like to give my horse a quick lunge in tack before getting on just to take the edge of a little. My concern is doing this in a wet muddy field as I wouldn’t want her to slip over or pull anything! Does anyone else have this issue on the yard there on!? Thanks John

Probably not a good idea, lunging in wet, muddy fields with a horse you don’t know could end in disaster. Why not ask if you can use the arena just for a 5 minute lunge before you get on the first few times ? Explain that you are worried.

hi Bonny this is my issue because our owner will not allow lunging in the arena, said it will just ruin the arena,

Any chance that you could have a lesson in the school with a BHS-registered instructor?
It might give you and your youngster some mutual confidence?

Can you not lunge in the arena but move around as you do it? This is what we used to have to do in order to not wreck the surface. Don’t lunge in the field though as others have said it’s a recipe for an injury.

I lunge but I don't stick to a circle on one area I actually run around the whole school most of the time and move around loads.

I totally understand you wanting to lunge a young fresh horse before you get on I did it for a good 6 months with mine.

I wouldn't want to do it in a field I would ask your yo if you could lunge but not on a 20 meter circle, explain you will run around the whole school I actually don't think that is unreasonable tbh.
