i've been working with my mare on her walk & trot and has come along nicely now, so want to move up a gear! Canter - shes great out on a hack and very responsive, but in the school shes finds it a little difficult (shes a 5yr old) I do lunge her (in a possoa) so i try to avoid asking for a canter (can they canter is a possoa?) But Mon night i wanted to see how she goes in just her bridle. Well she kept turning in towards me, but she does listen to my voice so i did keep sending her back out (any advice for this) and when i ask her to "canter" she really rushed her trot nd found it hard to stay in it for longer then 1 circle! Any advice or shall i just keep on doing what im doing (she'll soon get it right?)

Hi,
I have used a Pessoa for all my horses, it was originally recommended by a friend whom is a top Equine Orthopaedic Vet. You can certainly canter your horse in a Pessoa and by the sounds of it the Pessoa is exactly what she needs. You may find for the first few circles she will attempt to buck as they don't like the sensation of the strap on the back of the hamstrings (make sure its not too close to the hocks) but it is fantastic for making them step up into canter from a steady trot instead of just running on in trot then throwing themselves into canter. If you find she tries to buck (sometimes on the spot) just be quick to chase her forward with the lunge whip, after a few minutes you should find she will settle. Persevere because it is so good for their transitions as they have to go up and down completely rounded without the interference from a rider & their hands. A lot of people don't like the Pessoa but it is one of the best training aids to produce the correct muscles without the added problem of balancing a rider too. One word of warning, don't do too much in one session with a 5 yr old! 10 mins warm up 5 mins proper work on each rein then a good stretching down cooling period but increase as your mare becomes better developed
