For those people who don't like pessoas what do you lunge your horse in? I'm not convinced about the Pessoa but then i don't want a giraffe either because she's not using the right muscles. She goes nicely in side reins but surely that just looks pretty and isn't using her back either?

I lunge with 2 reins.

I am pretty sure side reins must just push them on the forehand, all they are doing is pulling the nose in.

A chambon is superb for building up topline and educating the horse to work long & low, this must not be ridden in but brilliant for lungeing. The ridden version is the De Gogue!

We only lunge in a cavesson

We only lunge to keep them fit though, as we cant always ride. I do belive we have other lunging equiptment somewhere in the garage

You are so right. You need a Pessoa to pull the bum in too.
But...what happens if you pull both in together? Does the horse arc upwards?
Someone should experiment.

I tend to use a combination of chambon, pessoa and 2 reins with no gadgets.
Not all at the same time I hasten to add

No far to scared to actually ride my horse!
I was actually considering taking up carrot sticks too.

Actually come to think of it I have barely ridden in the last 2 months

Just a fortnightly lesson at Talland and 15 minutes exciting walk on my box rested horse.

I do like Pessoas, but at work we mostly lunge in draw reins. From left bit ring, between front legs, up left side of body, over back, down right side of body, between front legs, to right bit ring. Sort of like a Harbridge I suppose. I despise side reins, the only thing I ever used them for was stopping my maniac pony getting out of control (aka strapping her down

If the horse is moving forward and tracking up they should work properly with 2 reins....I can't say I like pessoas that much....

I use 2 lines, side reins bungees and pessoas on a variety of horses - at the end of the day each horses is an individual and different things suit different horses.

when used CORRECTLY side reins are beneficial as are bungees and pessoas and can help to build correct topline and muscle
2 lines are only as good as the hands holding them, done wrong it only gives unstable contact and nothing soft or consistent to work into

OMG.
Next you'll be coming out with some ridiculous theory about lunging in side reins being beneficial when the horse is worked forward from behind (using a lunge whip) into appropriately fitted side reins to allow them to find their own contact without leaning.
You might even tell us that nonsense about working on a circle encouraging their engagement of the inside hind, suppling them, teaching them rhythm and balance.
Pah!

Cant be bother pi**ing around with all those gadgets. I just use my saddle, side reins (if I'm "working" him) and my ordinary bridle.

Just pass the rein over the head though the nearside bit ring and clip into the far side of the bit.

Lunge then ride with nothing more to do than chuck the lunge rein away! (And clip up the side reins if he's wearing them!)

I lunge on a headcoller, but my mare will drop her head etc on a headcoller, but thats just long and low. But if I want to do some on the bit stuff I use 2 lunge lines on a bridle and lunge roller, must say, I have never tried a pessoa.. Are they really that bad?

I didn't say there was anything wrong with using a Pessoa. But if your horse goes badly under saddle...it just might not be the horse that needs work

Edited to add that I meant that generally, and not directed at you, Izzy.

I dont like the pessoa at all - just when the horse starts working correctly it gets gobbed in the mouth. I would prefer the chambon.

When lunging you need to concentrate on getting the horse to move correctly from behind in order to give you a true outline. Saying that, you also need to work on suppling the horse before hand. I do lots of in hand work first, getting my horse to accept the bit and to soften his neck and also to bend and flex. I also get him to do turns on the forehand etc both ways before start lunging.

I see lots of people lunging their horses but mostly they just let them run around and hold onto a piece of string. Rarely do people understand how to actually work a horse properly on the lunge. I had lots of lessons with a really good instructor who taught me how to school in hand before progressing to lunging/long reining.

Shilasdair explains it very well. Circles are very good and you should work on bigger circles first then bringing the horse into a smaller circle and then sending him out again. That will get him to engage behind.

Saying that, one of my horses is a complete nightmare on the lunge and alternates between boxing the rein and running off. I either lunge him with two reins (the outside rein to stop him turning in), use a bungee set to only deter him from dropping his shoulder, running in and trying to kill me, or just dont lunge him (his preferred option).
