Daughters mare is a lovely forward going ride and quite confident but doesnt like being sent away or forward when lunging. She just wants to be at our side .I lunge my horse and have never experienced this before. She follows me and my daughter around the school and does a perfect join up but hates being sent away and is very resentful ears back and the odd buck which she never does being ridden.I have never experienced problems with lunging before and just wondered how you should deal with it.She trusts us and doesnt flinch if we flick the lunge line whip or wave our arms she wont move away .She moves her hind quarters but turns her face towards us.The only thing I havent tried is lunging in her bridle and tack maybe she would realise its work .Any ideas thanks.

What do you lunge her in? I would recommend always using a bridle, cavason, side reins and a roller or saddle. I don't see the point otherwise. Try having one of you stand int the middle holding the lunge line and the other walking her round as if leading her normally, when shes settled the leader should step away, keep doing this until she gets the hang of it. You may have to be firm with her and don't give up! It'l come in time

lunge her with two lines and a bridle. one lead her round then walk away, if you keep a steady contact on the outside rein she'll learn not to turn in. This can take hours, she may stand still, refuse to walk, back up, (In which case you back up too) but eventually she will get bored and do as you ask.

I have exactly this problem. Mine is slowly but surely getting the hang of it. It helps things, or seems to, to lunge her in full tack & two lunge reins.

It's hard but you have to be very firm. My mare will follow me around the school with her nose touching my shoulder blades practically!

[/ QUOTE ]i agree on this method ive always use it on none experienced horses and its the best method ive used

We tried the lead which helped and worked on one rein but I had to keep whip pointed at her shoulder to keep her away..She is really not happy about lunging shes a real face puller if she is not happy. The full tack might make her think she is working we will give it a go .We dont lunge very often just thought it might be a change from schooling. Thanks everyone
