How long should I lunge my horse for? Whats the max amount of time they should be lunged for.

thanks. she is 5. Im not sure if there is a max amount of time your supposed to lunge for aia thought anout 15 mins abbout maybe? :S

Personally if the horse was fit and working on a good surface I wouldn't lunge for longer than around 30 minutes. As MrsMozart says it does depend on a number of things.

Young, therefore keep to a minimum.

I don't like pure lunging. I'll use a Pessoa though for about five minutes each side, unless I'm wanting more muscle build up and/or flexion on one side.

If I have to lunge for some reason, I won't stand at one point, I'll move so the horse's track is eliptical rather than circular, puts less strain on the ned

Good advice from Mrs M - I was once told that 20 mins lunging was the equivalent of an hour hard schooling (and clearly can be hard going on the horse, constantly working on a circle). 15 -20 mins for a 5 year old should be plenty, IMO, but if the horse goes well, I'd be inclined to finish earlier as a reward for good work
