As the ginger ninja is still not 100% sound i thought I would bring him back into work gently by trying to lunge him in walk and a bit of trot. Sunday night he was ok, last night he was ok on his right rein, but a sod on his left rein. He would take 3 or 4 steps, stop, turn in, spin onto the other rein and rear. In the process he pulled my back. In the end i had to get the oh to walk round on the outside of him just to get a full circle.
I'm at my wits end now as he quite often does this. Any suggestions?

If you are sure it is not because he is uncomfortable try using two reins, you will have much more control and he will not be able to turn in when he feels like it. You are also able to move on and off of circles which will be better for his recovery.

Lunging is very high impact on their joints and limbs so I wouldn't lunge a horsr that isn't completely sound. The fact he does it on one rein suggests to me that he is just too uncomfortable on that rein. I would wait until he is sound. If the vet has advised exercise I would walk him in hand as it is much lower impact.
