Hi, i have a welch sec d that is comining up 2 years old in may,i would like to know if i can STATRT 2 LUNG HEr she is fne wth walking forword and stoping when i ask her,i have not had a younghester before, but i know how 2 lunge a horse shoud i use a brible or what

I would say introduce her to the lunge when she is 2 and just do a little bit in walk, no more than 5 mins. couple of mins on each rein. Then progress further when she's about 2 and a half. Do it for a bit longer and add short trots. But don't push her at such a young age, it won't be good for her joints.

For the time being you are teaching how what 'lunging' is - she'll find it very strange being asked to step away from and around you.

Just start with a headcollar and lunge line.

I don't think you should be lunging a pony that is not yet 2 years old. It is a good idea to teach her to walk properly in hand and obey verbal commands likes walk-on, halt and trot, and try to get her to halt square, but working on circles at that age is unnecessary. I suggest you go onto the BHS web site and buy a simple guide on lungeing and long lining your pony, or a book on "starting" your pony, it will give you all the information you need on what equipment to use and techniques for correct training of young horses.

If you get it wrong, you will confuse her and your early training experiences need to be straightforward and fun for her (and you).

I would perhaps start long reining at this stage or getting her used to the equipment but I personally wouldn't lunge any of my youngsters at that age.

If you are unsure how or where to start, go for some lessons first as by getting it wrong, damage can be done and accidents happen with the most experienced. It is difficult and lengthy to explain and there is nothing better than an actual demonstration to see for yourself how to do it.

I would 100% get someone very experienced to show you how to longline - everything must be slowly slowly, and if you make mistakes at this stage it can be crucial. Am sure everything will work out, but I would definately enlist the help of someone else initially.

much to young, to much hard work on growing babies. Leave till the very minimum of 3 but better still 4 years old
