So at the end of October I will be officially looking to buy (or possibly full loan) a horse.
I definitely want to loan before buying so I know it’s definitely the right horse for me.
My question is does anyone know if it would be possible for me to part share from now until October with the view to buy then?
I don’t have the time to commit to loaning a horse 7 days per week at the moment (hence me waiting until October to buy)

A lot of sellers (myself included) would not do loan with view to buy due to the risk of the horse being injured or spoilt during the loan period. That sid if a new owner had issues I would o everything I could to help them iron them out.

That’s very true I get what you’re saying. Do you think that more owners would consider sharing instead of loading? So I could share 3 days per week until October until buying?

It's difficult enough to buy a sound horse that suits you. If you are adding the criteria you're trying for, I can't see how you will ever find anything unless you are unbelievably lucky.

Two friends bought last year, they each took over nine months to find what they wanted and had multiple vet failures.

I have just sold one. I would not have accepted either a loan or a share before purchase, too much could go wrong.

So basically if I want to buy or loan a horse I will have to just buy them straight out rather than LWVTB?

To be perfectly honest, if I had a nice genuine horse to sell, I'd expect to find a buyer prepared to snap it up, I certainly wouldn't consider a LWVTB.
But if I buy your horse straight up how am I meant to know it’s nice and genuine? I mean there’s some pretty dodgy dealers out there if you get what I mean.

Correct. Mine was a straightforward, nice natured and capable 16hh cob. He sold within three weeks of a free advert on Preloved.

You could probably find a full loan (although good ones aren’t that easy to come across), which may in time lead to the owner offering a sale. But horses are usually loaned because the owner doesn’t want to sell.

It’s not impossible to find a horse with LWVTB or a short trial period but they are few and far between so you might be looking a longer time!

But then I guess the buyer was very lucky it was you selling the horse and not some dodgy dealer that had it doped up - that’s what I’m worrying about.

You may find a horse for loan that the owner will consider selling but a LWVTB is very unlikely, if someone has a nice horse why would they take the risk of loaning to a stranger who could mess it up then return it as 'unsuitable', you need to do your homework/ research and take a risk that it is the right horse.

I currently share a pony that I would love to full loan then buy and I know the owners would let me, the only problem is he has another sharer that can’t just be kicked off which I of course understand! But yes I think finding a horse on LWVTB will be hard.

Check for dodgy dealers on Facebook.
Get a vetting with a blood test.
And hope.

Sorry, but that's horse buying.

Can’t you ask if you can buy this one in October then? You won’t need to full loan if you are already sharing surely?

My problem is - his other sharer is stopping soon so I’ll be the only sharer. The problem is if I don’t start full loaning him or buy him within a few weeks of his other sharer stopping the owners will find another sharer for him.
They make all their money from sharing out their horses so they’ll never keep him for me until October.

This should be a simple solution, just seen your next post and still cannot see an issue, arrange to share and agree a price to buy in October, they can get another sharer in the meantime to pay the difference, although to me it sounds a rather unusual arrangement to keep horses and hire them out as 'shares' is more of a way of getting round having a RS licence with none of the overheads, making money from hiring out horses is a business whatever way you look at it.

They definitely are running a sort of business - I have no doubt that they care for their horses but it’s also their way of making money. I mean there’s no reason I can’t ask them if they can keep him for me until October but I highly doubt they will. Because to be fair to them they don’t know if I am still going to want him in October.

loads of places doing this up here-makes me quite cross as its quite a racket.

OP please make sure that this horse is priced right, I know you are already fond of it.

I would expect you to try the horse and make a decision about it's suitablility either with the help of a trainer or knowledgeable friend or on your own. As I care about any horse that i sell, if I thought you were unsuitable, I wouldn't sell it to you, simple but that's a choice I make, not all sellers care. BUT, I would never loan a horse to a potential purchaser.

To be honest I would pay anything more than £1000 at the moment even though by October his value should have gone up a bit with the amount of competitions we’ve got planed but you never know!

I did this in Switzerland in the eighties, hired a riding school horse for three days a week. It was a service I really appreciated, having the horse as 'mine' on my days. Why do you think it's a racket, any more than hire by the hour in lessons?

because the ones I know of are making a massive profit and not declaring it. I've shared horses myself and I had an RS lease before I bought my own-I am not against it in principle but what I see a lot of is people paying a lot of money for not much.

From now till October is 10months! I can’t imagine anyone wanting you to try out their horse for 10 months. That’s a long time!

Well I'm with you on the tax evasion. I had some dealings once with a fully operational riding school whose status was registered with HMRC as no longer in business. The rest, I guess, is up to the people paying.

Could you buy the horse now and get a sharer yourself?
To be honest that’s a great idea! But having been a sharer for two years myself I know things fall through and I can’t risk being left to look after a horse I don’t have time for.

I mean surely if you live anywhere near a farm or riding school you should expect a racket they’re not quiet places!
