They sponsor the BE young event horse championships now, but does anyone have any experience of them as an insurance broker?

They've given me a reasonable quote and were very knowledgeable (if a bit brusque) over the phone, but my vet has never dealt with them before. I thought I'd contact them because of their sponsorship......I'd never heard of them before.

Looking to insure a foal (8mths) with potential as a top eventer/broodmare. SEIB want a 5 stage vetting (on a foal?).....

we have used Lycetts for all our insurance - household, special effects, properties, grooms indemnity, cars etc etc for a number of years, and so far I can't fault them at all.

Having said that - none of our horses are insured - with them or anyone - so can't say about that bit!!!

Generally though, they are very well thought of with everyone I know.

A friend has been insured with Towergate AIUA insurance for several years and recommended them to us. They made several successrul claims without a problem.

We contacted the broker they used who no longer dealt with Towergate. I eventually found that Lycetts were brokers for (or had a stake in Towergate) and their Newcastle office is across the road from my workplace. I went to the office and filled in the forms and they were passed to the Newmarket (Hamiltons??) office that deals with all equestrian policies (so I lost the local connection I really went to them for as all contact is now via Newmarket). The Newcastle office had an equine insurance contact but she basically took the forms and passed them to Newmarket. I found them a bit brusque as well but knowledgable as you say.

We have not made a claim but our friend spoke highly of Towergate and they have been good to deal with. Only down side is that Lycetts like to be paid up front. Our renewal has just come through and they don't offer monthly installments.

I also researched that "Gloucester-based insurer Ecclesiastical has bought a 40% stake in specialist broker Lycetts, and said it plans to increase this holding over the next few years" early last year.

From the same source "Ecclesiastical, the specialist insurer of churches, has acquired South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) and Equestrian Underwriting Agencies" in 2008 so they may have similar terms to SEIB.

So, in our case, Lycetts are brokers for Towergate AIUA that our friend recommended. They charged £25ish to handle the paperwork. I have since found there is a Towergate office a few streets away so I could probably have saved the £25. They were cheaper than Petplan that we had used for years but mainly because we chose the £500 excess for vet claims which petplan didn't offer.

AND

I have often wondered what they would be like if we claimed because of the change of broker etc since our friends claims and I haven't seen them mentioned on here when people ask about good insurance companies.

I can highly recommend Lycetts, previously Hamiltons, from a professional view. I have worked with them for 5 years and they have been nothing but efficient, polite, and very knowlegeable. Hamiltons in Newmarket sold themselves to Lycetts as they saw it as the most efficient way of growing the business. Also means they can offer products they were unable to offer before eg medical insurance. PS. I don't work for them, in case it all looks a bit glowing, just appreciate decent service when I come across it!

We won cover from them at the young horse champs last year but also had already insured 2 horses with them earlier in the year and some property. Been very impressed with them and I found out that one of the girls I have been in contact with I knew from uni whcih was nice!! Always been very happy.

Thankyou for all your replies - very informative!

I think we'll give them a go as they really seem to know what they're talking about, and seem to have a thumbs up from all of you even if my vet's secretary didn't know anything about them........eeeek!
