I bought my horse a full face hood a couple of years ago. Unfotunately it didn't work out.
A) He was naughty to put it on and B) I had to rescue him a couple of times when it went over his eyes!! Not ideal!!

After reading some posts on here today I have noticed a hood that just goes up to the ears. Will this need to be kept secure with a head collar? Not keen on leaving a head collar on in the field but I think I have a field safe one somewhere. The reason I need a hood is that the bottom 1/4 of his mane rubs in winter rugs. He doesn't have a lot of mane anway so every bit it precious!!! Any ideas please???!!

someone on my yard uses one that has ear holes so you dont leave a headcollar on. and another that zips up to the jaw also with ear holes.
hope that helps

Don't do it!!! I bought a lycra hood for my boy who's got sweet itch and turned him out in it; when I went up later it had slipped and gone all over his eyes, and he couldn't see, was just standing there with his head down by his knees, poor chappie. Thank goodness nothing awful happened.

There was a previous thread about this a few months ago I seem to remember - if you search for it - with many people saying basically the same thing, that these hoods slip and can be dangerous (could even strangle a horse too I would think).

I got pointed towards the snuggy hoods website yesterday as I'm currently looking for something that will solve our disappearing mane issues in winter, take a look there! There appeared to be a lot of rugs/hoods for various different things, they might be able to help? :)

I don't like lycra hoods, HOWEVER, I have a range of Snuggy Hoods Turnout Hoods.

I have been using them for years, and never had one slip at all. They are showerproof, so they wear them in the field if we are going anywhere, or they keep the ponies clean before a show.

Don't waste money on lycra, just get a Snuggy instead.

Another vote for Snuggy Hoods- try Ebay for cheaper ones. I got mine new but a good bit cheaper off ebay.

A little tip for keeping the eyes free is to loop a bit of string through the eye holes over the horses face and tie it- It holds the eye holes completely away if your worried about them slipping.

Take great care with any turnout hoods. A horse in my area was turned out in one and it came down over his eyes. Somehow he managed to scrape it back out of the way but it got stuck to his eyelid and turned the eyelid inside out so that the eye had no covering or blinking. By the morning he was a veterinary emergency and I don't think it was a good outcome.

I used a Snuggy hood last year and it never slipped an inch - it was my best purchase of the year in saving her mane and keeping her clean. However I am very wary of it catching and getting over her eyes. Thankfully she is kept at home so I can check it a lot but obviously not a great amount during the night. Also she is not an itchy horse if that makes sense - some horses I know just like to rub and I can see that this might be a problem.....
