Just looking for advice and help/experience on Lyme disease please, can anybody be sure their horse has been infected ? My 20 year old mare has always been in perfect condition but last year I think she may have experienced a tick bite and this year she had lost weight very rapidly, had lymphangitis and is very down in herself - her bloods show bacteria even after several visits from the vets and antibiotics, any help, advice or experiences really appreciated, thanks

A friends horse had it, confirmed by blood tests, not sure on all the details but she did recover fully after treatment and is still going strong several years later, although she was not as unwell as yours when diagnosed, are you certain it is Lymes and that there is nothing else going on that could be confusing matters.

FLF was diagnosed with lymes 11 months ago, she was very poorly. Fab antibiotics were imported by vets (at monster expense) and she has made a recovery but was pretty poor till about Feb this year. Only in the last couple of months has she been completely 100% tho was signed off by vets in March.
North Hampshire, there were a few other cases within that area last autumn.
Has your vet tested for it?

Hi Fuzzy Furry, bloods have been taken and show bacteria but no specific test done for Lyme disease I'm just going with my gut reaction to the symptoms and I reckon the vet is too as the antibiotic he has given us is used for the treatment of LD X

I hope it works for your horse. FLF had a 30 day course, all injected.
Good luck x

Ycbm, it's only if the tick is infected that Lymes is a potential issue.

Mine was diagnosed through bloods run at Liphook in Jan 2016. She was turned away for 3 months and had a month's course of doxycycline at the beginning. My understanding is that the blood work would now always test positive/ it never truly goes away so future treatment needs would be based on symptoms. Symptoms for mine were a very dull lethargic pony who just couldn't/wouldn't move anywhere.
However a friend's horse down the road had it and was almost pts he was so severely affected and spent a reasonable period of time hospitalised as a result. Again, now several years on you wouldn't know to look at him :)
