Hve just got home and aside from a possible small amount of fattening below the fetlock, his leg looks normal.
He has a bit of mud fever and a cut, should I clean them etc or leave well alone?
Am I good to ride him? Can't think why not if he's sound but never dealt with it before.

At a guess, it's the mud fever thats making it swollen. Definately treat the mud fever and clean the cut up. Mud fever will not get better untreated only worse.

If he was sound and not sore when the leg is touched then i would not worry about going for a steady ride myself, could help disperse the fluid. I would clean the cut though if it appears dirty and put some antiseptic/fly repellent stuff on on they'll just get at it.

I would clean the cuts and treat the mud fever, but with something that he's had on before. Re exercising, I always rode my boy even when his legs got quite swollen (obviously not if he was lame!) as I found the it helped reduce the swelling, usually a quiet hack or some gentle schooling.

I too wholeheartedly endorse lots of gentle exercise whether ridden or in hand for lymphangitis. Even if the horse is very sore it is essential that you keep them moving. I have a mare who has had repeated attacks of lymphangitis and even on her very worst attack I was walking her for half an hour in every two hours and that was when she was practically crippled and her entire leg was constantly oozing lymph fluid. I felt like the worse Mum in the world at the time as it was obviously very painful at first but we soon reaped the benefit.

Hope he is better soon.
