Not sure, our mare was turned out early or late to avoid the flies plus she was happier to move when it was cooler & there was dew on the grass, so the situation never came into our heads

Any chemisty type people who could answer this? Its based on vaseline/petroleum jelly but it's pink (if that helps)
 
Hi, our mare and my friends horse both had this from having black thorn get inside the leg from a cut whilst going through the awful stuff.
My mum didn't have insurance for our elderly mare and she wasn't lame with it and it was left and never went down.
My friends youngster was operated on to remove the black thorn and he made a full recovery quickly. Neither of us were told to wash the legs at any stage, I think that's just agrivating the leg.
I'd ask for an X-ray.
 
Hi again everyone, as i said i had the vet out on tuesday, we upped the steroid dosage and came to a agreement to keep him out 24/7 just bandaged during the day. As of Wednesday am his legs were normal size and were normal size this morning too, he is feeling much better in himself as well, he is much more active in the field and you can see him smiling. Not sure if i mentioned but we got the swab results back yesterday, no bacteria growing, a marginal amount of fungi but we think this was more to do with the fact we had been keeping the area so wet and moist with washing and creams. So we have decided to stick on the dosage of prednisolone 100 am and 100pm, and the doxycycline (karidox) and bandage during sunlight hours...hopefully nothing will trigger his immune system again and we should be able to come off the steroids in 3 weeks or so... =)
