We have a 16hh ex racer gelding called Alfie who has, whilst with us, 'tweaked' a hind tendon twice due to pratting about in the field; both times he has recovered well with box rest, bute, and cold hosing, although he is also mud fever prone and the two consequently tend to coincide due to the hosing!
Came up last night and something obviously wasn't right - normally he comes cantering over when I yell but only walked, very slowly, and was obviously stiff behind. Then noticed his right hind fetlock was swollen to twice normal size, he was duly trotted up and found to be not outright lame but stiff and reluctant to move forwards and lacking his usual floating flamboyant paces. Leg was then hosed for about half an hour and he was turned back out with his boyfriend because stabling was not a possibility, due to us having (a bit stupidly) no bedding to put down!!
Swelling seemed to have reduced somewhat this morning but he was hosed again and the mud fever (which is on the OTHER fetlock) was afterwards dried, had the scabs removed, and sudocrem applied - it's healing nicely
I have been thinking however - surely if it was a tendon he'd be more lame? Is lymphangitis a possibility? It would make sense surely as it said (on wikipedia admittedly) 'lymphangitis is commonly associated with a wound' and he has had mud fever (though only on the other leg)(we think)?
Basically help!? Hopefully I am just being paranoid but...! (I will put up pics of swollen leg later). Side note: trust this to happen when he's finally ready to come back into work after the winter.
