Hello, just looking for a bit of help really.

I'll hopefully be taking my daughter and her share pony to Thierry very first show in the next few weeks. However, it's been about 15 years since I last did any showing, and i was on top....so I'm not really sure what I should be wearing myself.

I assume I'll need a tweed jacket as he's M&M, and he's bay....so beige trousers? What sort of hat should I wear?

Will we get marked down if my daughter and my tweeds don't match?

Thank you :-)

Hello, Tweed jacket is correct and always look smart and don't worry if they don't match as long as you both look smart and compliment each other. If the pony has dark legs then light trousers and visa versa. A lot of people are wearing country boots but any smart sensible shoe you can run in is fine. I don't think you have to wear a hat but it always looks smart, how about a tweed flat cap? I'd look at ES Photography's website as they have photographed HOYS for the past couple of years and you can see on there what people wear. Make sure your pony's lead is attached to the noseband and not his bit and you should hold the lead rein in the outside hand so the inside hand is free (incase child needs any assistance/has a wobble) Good luck and enjoy!

You must always wear a hat of some kind. For handling a LR pony this can be anything from a flat cap or a beageler to a full blown frilly hat that wouldnt be out of place at a wedding! Most people go with something like this

Thank you both. I'm probably going to investigate local charity shops for a hat then....unfortunately I'm one of those people who look utterly terrible in a hat :-( What sort of shirt is most appropriate? I was going to get Rosie a school shirt and a tie of some sort to go with it.

If you're wearing a tweed jacket then normal shirt (school shirt) and tie. If not some people wear all sorts of frilly frocks! Definitely have a look at some photos on some horsey photographer websites, they'll really help. Hats aren't mandatory in lead rein and in hand classes but I would always wear one, they finish the overall picture and of course are safer than no hat! I'm not a hat person either but I'm sure you'll find something to suit, are you doing a local show?

SParkeyboy, Not sure where you are getting your info from, apart from the welsh cobs (C&D's) inhand classes it is correct turnout to have a hat of some kind on in every other class.

conniegirl my info comes from being on the showing circuit for a number of years, yes it's correct to wear one but you won't be heavily penalised for not wearing one at a local show!

Sparkeyboy, I am both a judge and have competed at a high level for over 20years. I can tell you that you are incorrect. Not wearing a hat shows disrespect for the judge and for showing as a whole, Which can get up a lot of judges noses. It also looks amatureish and sloppy. The only class this is not the case is the welsh cobs inhand or evening performance but they are a whole different kettle of fish.

As a judge I dont care what hat you wear (except a baseball cap!) but you should be wearing one! Yes the class will primarily be judged on the pony but correct turnout can go a long way to ensuring that the overall picture looks correct and pleasing to the eye.

OP if you are wearing a tweed jacket with trousers and a shirt and tie then you would probably be best off with a beagler.
If you are wearing the tweed jacket with a frilly blouse (or a plain white/cream blouse with a colourful scarf) then the hat I posted above, or a trilby type hat would be best.
I picked one up at a carboot sale for £2 last week so it doesnt have to break the bank.

If you are going to be doing a fair bit is showing its worth having a look on Horsegossip for a second hand matching LR outfit, they hold their value really well and you will get your money back if you want to sell it when you're done with it,
With regard to the hat - if you do not a big fan of hats then a baker boy style flat cap in matching tweed might be a good option. Good Luck

Hats are extremely expensive (in my opinion anyway!), I do agree with conniegirl in that you should wear one for all the above reasons, but you won't be stopped from entering if you do not wear one!

I did lead rein with my niece at our local show on her dartmoor and I never wore a hat and was never asked to leave and I never even received a comment from the judge in regards to not having one, just always made sure my hair was smart, tidy and fastened back. Thankfully I never bought one because she lost interest after one season and decided to be a uni-cyclist!

We all have to start somewhere and your local shows are the best place to go, as you can go and have fun, ask the judge for feedback and learn from others.
