My daughter is doing first ridden. We are doing some local shows and a couple of county and agricultural shows.
I have came across a black saddle that may do the trick and is a price I can afford. However I know brown is the preferred colour but will I be able to get away with black. She is chestnut.

As long as she, the pony and the tack are spotlessly clean black will be fine for local level showing - go and have fun!!

That's not true. I used to show my lightweight hunter in a black saddle. As long as its a straight cut saddle and show's off the horse then it should be ok. Shadow my hunter was black and brown saddle never looked right on him.

In this day and age most judges don't care whether the tack is black or brown so long as it is neat, smart and fits both pony and rider!

I've just looked for the judge and it's Tweetie Nimmo. I have shown and won under her in black tack on grays, blacks and bays. So long as you don't have a Shetland you should do grand!

In this case you WILL need brown!! Could you borrow something for the occassion? Or maybe look on horse gossip website for sale section - lots of show tack on there at good prices.

Brown tack is NOT compulsory! It is just preffered to black. Judges should be looking beyond the colour of the tack anywho.

I would have to agree here.
Personally I'd much rather a chestnut in brown but only judges that are "old style plonkers" judge and mark you on the tack in my opinion!
All the best at the show! :D
