What is it with some drivers. On monday two ladies from my yard took thier children (3yrs) for a walk on their shetland ponies. Whilst going down a single track road between two rivers, a car stopped as you would expect to wait for them to get to the end (a short road distance). A further car driven by a man, didnt think he should have to wait for 30 seconds and over took the car which was kindly waiting. It is a very narrow road and the car sped up to the shetlands hitting one of them which knocked the little girl off. The little girl was taken to hospital but is ok and the shetland was hurt but again appears to be ok. The driver didnt stop but his number was taken.

Some people are unbelivable please say it was reported to the police?

I do hope something gets done about it and not just ignored, people like that are a major danger to others. Considering how small children and shetlands are it could have ended so so badly, it shouldn't have to come to that.

Hope all involved are ok.

If the Police were in attendance and they have his number plate then I would guess they'll be looking to prosecute as it's illegal not to stop when you're involved in an accident isn't it?

Please tell me that you were wearing reflective jackets.!!!!!

I do hope you are not going to imply it is their fault if they weren't wearing any reflectives....

I keep saying this, but I have been on the road a long time, and I annually cover something like 35,000 on all sorts of roads.

In the last couple of years I have seen a growing trend of people trying to go faster and faster, despite the fact that the roads have got busier and busier. I actually give myself longer to get to places now, than I did 20 years ago when I was driving an old 1600cc knackered Sierra (which the firm constantly told me they were about to replace).

I don't know how this trend started, but it is getting worse, even for other motorists, let alone riders, walkers, cyclists and the like.

Failing to stop is a serious motoring offence, and given that a pony and child were involved, the driver will not have a happy time...thank goodness.

Car passes what seems to be a parked car and speeds up,hits pony because he cant see it.Yes ,it is irresponsible to ride or lead on modern roads without fluorescent high vis clothing of some sort.

Granted reflectives help a lot, personally I do not leave my yard without them. However if the road is narrow and is approaching and overtaking a 'parked' car and is unable to stop shortly afterwards imo he is going too fast. As for not stopping once hitting a child and her pony is inexcusable!

I totally agree, and yes I hope the police do catch up with the driver.I hope he is not going to be able to mitigate his offence by pointing to a lack of any form of Hi Viz.

No excuse not to stop once he had hit them! Hi Viz should be worn agreed but anyone who overtakes a parked car and fails to spot at least two horses either needs to go to specsavers or not be on the roads period

I can see what you're saying and agree that reflectives are a must, plus I hope he can't argue that they would have been more visable with them on (though we don't know if they were wearing them yet). However, regardless of this, he shouldn’t have swung around the stopped car without giving thought to why it had stopped. He should have realised there was probably a reason why it had stopped, more than likely that there would be something in front of it, so should have driven with care.

If he managed to hit a pony without realising and driven off, then he certainly shouldn’t be driving. If he hit the pony, realised and still drove off, then he shouldn’t be driving.

OP – please let us know what the outcome to this case is.

Ok so if he cant see a pony being led he shouldn't be driving... So I shouldn't walk down the road without hi viz

Hi vis was worn. There are no blind spots on what is a very open (between two rivers) straight road. This driver just did not want to wait. Like most drivers where horses are concerned.

So I should don hi viz to walk to the bus stop or to collect my paper just in case there is a blind driver on the road.. I think not!!

If I was on one of our local narrow lanes I certainly would, and certain bus stops it is advisable so that the bus actually sees you and stops.

But he can't pull that anyway if they were wearing hi viz and presumably 'failure to stop' too. I hope they find them. It is the failure to stop me which gets me, sometimes things are difficult to spot until it is too late and accidents will happen but surely you would stop.

Unbelievable - I hope the police follow up and actually do something about it.

Not nearly as bad but still incredible, there was a Riding & Road Safety Test at our stables at the weekend. A young girl was taking it (guessing about 12/13) on her own bombproof pony. Stewards were dotted about, there were signs up saying "exam in progress" and everyone was hi-vized to their eyeballs. The girl signalled left at a junction and stopped to check for traffic - the car behind her pulled out, overtook and turned left in front of her! Her pony was obviously upset and swung its bum round so she had to turn it and halt again. She failed as a result and was in floods of tears

What an idiot driver.

This happenend to me the other day. Guy on a motorbike pulled straight out of a crossroads in front of me - hit the brakes, skidded and came off his bike

He told me he was sorry but didn't see me

Me - wearing bright hi viz jacket and hat band

Horse - 17hh coloured (lots of white) wide

wearing hi viz leg bands.

I give up.

I am surprised at a motorcyclist not seeing you, they are usually the most considerate of road users round horses (I was told by an old biker that this is because they do not want half a ton of horse landing on them and the bike!

)

I would also have thought that as a fellow vulnerable road user, looking out for HI-Viz would be second nature for him

Maybe the high viz gave you that extra split second for him to brake and not actually hit you.Phew, what a scary near miss.

I hope he gets everything thown at him. There are so many morons/nutters on the road now. I don't go anywhere on the road without my 6 foot lunge whip now, I keep it stuck out whenever a car comes so they have to keep their distance!

Sorry but I think most of you have missed the point. What has hi vis clothing got to do with it. The fact is the driver was driving without due care and attention and failed to stop at the scene of the accident. I fail to see how the driver could not see 2 adults, 2 children and 2 ponys. there is no legal requirement to have hi vis clothig on and anyway children have very bright kit on nowadays.
