right as i said before me and the OH moved out a few months ago, and need to cut a few corners, an i really dont want to have to sell my boy, soooooooooooooo i am going to make the big step and move him to a diy stables near me!!!

We need to save money and i think this is one of the best ways to do it, as at the moment i am paying 260 a month and i think could deffo cut down on that!

I have never done it on my own before so am really hoping that with the help and advice froom all of you guys i will be able to do this!

It is sooooo close to where i live it is un-true, i could walk it in 10minutes!

I have got the knowledge, its just i tend not to use it as much as i could as there is always someone else there to do it for me.

Ohhh just a few questions to all you already DIY's out there, as my horse is on rubber mattting at the moment, how much straw do you think he will go through in a month? and what is the avergae cost of it?

With D.I.Y you will be saving money, and I think you will enjoy doing more with your horse. It's nice to be there and spend time pottering around

i always thought people dit it themselves anyway !! hmmm what is all this livery stuff about .. maybe thats a really daft question ! sorry !! but could someone explain ... its all DIY near me ... anyone ?

hehe

OMG !!! whats the point in having them !! i couldnt imagine not mucking my horse out and grooming and going to see her 2 - 3 times a day to spend quality time together ... am i the only one who feels this way ??or am i being pig ignorant ?

if you need to work to keep them then you cant always be there, much better that you have someone doing everything so you can spend time with your horses than rushing about & having no time to ride etc

I keep both of mine DIY and I like it that way, although I do struggle with the 5am starts, especially in winter! Good luck with it, I don't think you'll regret the decision, you get a much better bond with you horse in my opinion

Without any livery I pay in winter

Chancer - 14.3 gypsy cob

27.50 rent
2 bales of shavings at 6.20 each
4 bales of hay at 2.00 (very cheap)
Feed and supplements - about £6

So an average of 54, then need to allow for all those little extras like shoeing, worming teeth, insurance etc.

Cario - 16.3 clydesdale on rubber mats

27.50 rent
1 1/2 bales of shavings at 6.20 each
6 - 7 bales of hay at 2.00 (very cheap)
Feed and supplements - about £6

Obviously use hardly any hay and shavings during the summer as they are out most of the time, probably about a 1/2 bale of shaving and a bale of hay max.

Rent £17pw ea
Hay large bales £17pw
Bedding £12pw (on rubber matting 4 stables)
Feed
Alfa A
Speedibeat
Stud Mix & Pasture Mix (1 yearling/in-foal mare, 2 in wrk)
Sunflower seeds instead of oil
Garlic
Your costs will depend on how much you pay for bedding/hay/feed & rent

The rent is going to be £25pw, my OH best friends dad is a framer so we are going to ask him about the straw and hay, and going to ring the feed man up this weekend

I will be happy if it was less then 200 a month!

It'll balance out, it'll be more in winter with more feed/hay/bedding and less in summer if you can turn out more!! DIY will be much more rewarding for you too!!

If you're only paying 260 per month fo part or full livery stay there. We're diy and our bills come in way over £200 per month - and we're not on an outrageously expensive yard either!

Ok people stop with the 'whats the point in having them!' And yes it is somewhat ignorant to think that we are all able to go two or three times a day to see our horses. The point is if you work shifts etc you cannot look after them where as if you know you can't get to your horse they will be cared for!!
My boy is on Full livery and yes that means someone else picks up poo but I still see him everyday and have a very good and loving relationship.
Ok rant aside, hope the move goes well and helps you out and, as hoped, saves you money. £25 seems about average but it's all the extra's that add up.

I pay 25 quid diy per week. I agree though that its hard to see your horse all the time, but it is still possible to have a great relationship.

So just on average then how much does everything come up to in a month for you?

well its 100 quid livery which includes haylage and straw, feed on top of that. Shoeing, worming and physio which she has every month as well as saddle fitting. Probably about 200 quid odd. I do occasionally have other expenses such as rugs etc. At the moment a lot more exoense as I am injured so my horse being ridden for me.
