After my last thread about feeling guilty about selling my horse I have come to the heartbreaking decision to sell him.

I went out with a friend on a hack on one of her ponies and had such fun cantering and galloping around the countryside, which I just can't do with mine. I really had such a wonderful day and really had to admit that was what I wanted to be able to do.

I would want to get a pony, which is suitable for me to hack but also just as good for my kids to lead rein on. I have seen a couple of older ponies for sale, but how old is too old? The ones I have seen are around 15-18 years old.

Thanks

Oh golly ponies go on forever if you look after them right :) I have a handful of ancient old ponies out the back, all are in their 20s and 30s and they are still sound and ridden out reasonably regularly. You're making the right decision, horses/ponies are supposed to be about having fun :)

Personally whilst ponies do 'go forwever' after 14/15 they do tend to be more prone to breaking/disease etc and if your buying for your kids as well, buy one who is more likely to have many many years, so I'd personally buy something around 8 - 11ish
