Had the vet up this morning for teeth and jabs, he was a good boy and the vet was really nice too, showing me his teeth that hadn't errupted yet blah blah.

Anyway just having a chat about my new lad and asked if there was anything else before he went, oh I said he seems to be rubbing his tail, could you just have a look for me, off he toddles and I find him looking at his other tail, Emmm no not that tail his bushy tail, the vet stood up and looked at me with such a straight face, my dear he says I have been studying for years and practising for more years I care to remember and whilst you may think he has two tails, one is called his penis and if he has been rubbing the base of this we are in trouble, then bursts in to bouts of laughter .

He explained that some itching of the tail can be caused by problems with the penis and said that I had made his day and it would be one to discuss down at the practice, he then proceeded to give his willy area a good clean for me.

Well you certainly learn something new every day. I never knew that some tail rubbing can be caused by penis problems!!!

I think the vet saw my beetroot face at my gaff and felt sorry for me and said that he could do with a clean down there so while he was having a good look he would do it.

StacieandJed- I still am laughing to myself about it, I really thought he had got it wrong and was looking in the totally wrong area. Yes apparently he says that while they would look at tail rubbing as connected to allergies for flys etc, they have found it also to be connected to the penis and this is the closest thing they can scratch.

He really was a fantastic vet who took his time and really explained things to me. a big thumbs up for Poolhouse Vets in Lichfield.

Did he say what the connection is? My pony is often scratching his tail and also often has dirty 'bits' (compared to our other horses anyway).

TBH I at this point wasn't listening properly, too busy cringing but I know he did mention stones.

Also if a horse is showing hair loss on the base of his tail it could just be flies etc or the on set of something like mild sweet itch, however he did say that he also looks at the penis and sheath first just to make sure it looks and feels ok.

I am off to buy a bug rug and see if this helps him .
